Potty Training

I am afraid to take my puppy outside because she dosnt have all of her shots, I am afraid of parvo. I live in a condo and don't want to take her where everyone takes their dogs. A lady said parvo doesn't live on the cement, is that true?

Also has anyones dog ever had Giardia? My new pup was just diagnosed with it yesterday, I am afraid of my 2yr old daughter. Any advise?

Re: Potty Training

You do need to be very careful with a puppy about where you potty them. Try to find a spot where no one else goes with their dogs. I don't really know if it lives on cement or not...

Giardia is very common, sometimes even found in domestic drinking water wells. When we moved into our first apartment I got giardia form the water in the drinking water there. It was on a private well. Be very careful with your little one and being around the stools of the dog. Pick them up right away, lots of waterless hand sanitizers around the house (use them every time you think about it, many times each day), wipe things down with disposable wipes a lot, more than you would think necessary normally, avoid letting the dog lick your child's face, etc.

The signs of giardia in humans starts with diarrhea and usually progresses into what docs refer to as "explosive diarrhea." You will know what it means if it happens. However, even in humans, medications take care of it within a week or two, no problem. Just keep an eye on things and don't hesitate to act if something doesn't seem right.

Parvo can live on cement or any where that is not disenfected. You need to be careful with your puppy till it has had all three puppy shots (6wks, 9wks, 12wks.).
Giardia is very commonly misdiagnosed. It looks like an air bubble under a microscope. Don't worry your self to death about it. Use common sense, don't let your daughter touch the poop. If you got your puppy from a clean, sanitized place, the giardia is probally not even active. I assume you vet gave you metronitizole or flagel to treat it. That will clear it right up.

Good luck and have fun with your puppy.
