early riser

this may seem like a dumb question to some but i am really not sure. if a dog wakes every morning at 5:00 will he always do that or do they sleep longer the older they get. my puppy is 41/2 mos old and i cant see myself getting up at 5:00 for ever. it's a little too early. i'm not sure if he will continue to do this because we are establishing a pattern? or do you try to stretch the time? he goes to bed at 10. i here alot of puppies sleeping til 6:00 6:30 and they are even younger. the problem is once he is up at that hour he will not go back in his crate. he is done for the night.

Re: early riser

I would try to stretch the time a little--what time is the last time you give them water I wouldn't leave it down past 7:30 at this time. There will be a time when you can leave the water down indefinitely. Maybe you can take the dog out about 10:30. Is the dog crated in your room or in another room? If the dog is in your room, maybe you both are getting used to the 5:00 thing--you hear the dog stir, the dog hears you stirring and then everyone is up. Also what type of do is it? Smaller breed pups will not be able to hold it as long as longer breed pup and it may take a little longer.

Re: early riser

I am very fortunate that my dog doesnt get up before I do, Iliterally have to drag him out of the kennel at 6:30 (i leave for work at 7am)even though I know tht he has o go, he just hates getting up. Me dog is also 4 months old and started off waking up between 4-5:30 am but I guess he also got tired of that. Try walking him later at night and see if that helps out.

Re: early riser

He will sleep longer when he is older, don't worry. Some puppies just like getting up early, but he will sleep longer later.

Jaylie got up at five every morning for about four months, but now she sleeps until I get up. (You know, sometimes five, sometimes ten)

I'm very lucky with Blitz...He's ten weeks and he doesn't get up until eight!

Re: early riser

My pup Gugul (3+ months) used to get up at 4.30~5.00 a.m. After I started taking her walk before i go to sleep, she gets up at 6.30, go out for 5 minutes (would do the routine), and sleep again until 8.30 a.m . You could also try taking your pup for walk before you go to sleep. All the best!
