Collar training

hey all, first post here.

I have a female Beagle mix that is 7 weeks old, and I was wondering about dog collars.

She is a small pup, her mother was a purebred beagle 12' and her pups not very large. The smallest collar I can find is 8' around (I even tried cat collars) and it is still quite loose on her. Now she does not like it at all, and her behavior with it on becomes quite erratic, much more twitcgy and all around different than without the collar. I put it on for a few hours today thinking that she would become accustomed to it quite easily, intially all she would do was scratch it, and spin around and roll trying to remove it. SHe will rest with it however. NOw after a number of hours with it on, the scratching is less frequent, however the erratic behavior is still there.

The collar is in no way too tight, if anything it may be too loose, could this be the problem? Or am I just trying to get her used to a collar to early at 7 weeks? I know I don't like the way it makes her personality change right now, but a collar is an inevitable thing so I'd like to get it done early as possible.

thanks

Re: Collar training

Normal behavior for some dogs. Leave it on for 20 minutes or so and then increase the time as she becomes more tolerant of it. Seven weeks is a very young pup. Most breeders don't let dogs go that young. She would have benefited greatly by more time with her litter and mom. You will need lots of patience with her.
