How much exercise?

How do you determine what is the appropriate amount of exercise for your dog? We recently adopted a poodle mix from the shelter (can't tell what else he is besides poodle). We're told he's about 1.5 years old, and he's about 17 pounds.

We've been walking him twice a day, usually for about 20 minutes each. We also let him out a third time right before we go to bed, but that's usually just a quick 'round the complex to let him relieve himself.

Seems to us that's been an ok amount, since he hasn't destroyed anything in the house when left alone, but I was just wondering. Also, as the weather gets warmer, should the amount of exercise be adjusted? I'm afraid of over exerting him in the heat?

Re: How much exercise?

I have a 20 lb. mini schnauzer that can walk/run for a hour and play fetch for another hour (with a few breaks to praise her) and she lets me know when she is tired. Then we go inside and she will take a nap and be ready to go again.

Re: How much exercise?

My dog is about the same size, and we walk twice or three times a day for 20-45 minutes each. When it's super hot, I try to limit the longer walks for early in the morning or dusk when it's not quite as bad. We also try to stick to shady or wooded areas. We typically walk along a small creek. When it's really hot, we end up in the creek.

Since my dog is brachycephalic (smushy-faced), extreme heat is more of a concern than with normal nosed dogs. I have a weather-bug thing installed on my computer, so I can check the temp and heat index before we leave. If the heat index is over 75F, I keep the walks short.

But mostly, I just keep an eye on him. If he's panting excessively and lagging behind, we'll cut it short. If not, we take another lap around the park.

Every dog is different. I believe they will let you know when they have had enough. I have a male boxer that is one year old and he NEVER gets enough.
