Sonic Anti-Bark devices?

I'm looking into purchasing a barking deterrent that uses sound to discourage the barking.
My parents have a neighbour who is by no means an animal lover (read: he sets out live traps with poison in them to catch wild animals in their neighbourhood.. even though it is illegal to do so) and has started making comments about the way my dog and my parents' dog interact when they are together. Basically, they bark at this neighbour any time he goes into his backyard (more than likely because he has taunted them numerous times and sometimes throws debris into my parents' yard) and I have started to worry that he may try to silence the dogs himself. The dogs are supervised at all times when they are in the yard, but it is a little over half an acre and lined with bushes so it can be difficult to make sure the dogs don't get into anything they shouldn't while they run around.
Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone on the board has used a sonic anti-barking device and get some feedback from them. What kind did you use? Did it work? How quickly did you see results? Would you recommend it?
Any help I could get would be great.

My daughter got a Petsafe unit for her Beagle and it works very well. The better ones will not trigger on random noise, but only when the dog barks.

You need to report the threats to the police along with the poisen and traps. There is no reason for you to have to live in fear for the lives of your dogs. Dogs are going to bark at each other when they play, and they are going to alert when they sense a threat.

Re: Sonic Anti-Bark devices?

My parents have called both Animal Control and the police on him several times before and have also taken pictures of various dead animals caught in his traps. Both Animal Control and the police told us that there was nothing they could do. He clears the traps out fairly quickly and burns the remains, and unless they (animal control) are able to catch him red handed there is nothing that can be done to stop him. The most they were able to do was fine him for burning things in his backyard without a regulation fire pit. Our property backs on to protected forest (with numerous trails for hikers) and this man had large leg traps scattered throughout the brush about twenty yards out from where his property ends. The police and animal control were called to deal with that too, but because they were not able to find the traps (the brush is fairly dense) nothing was ever done.
It is scary what people can get away with.

Re: Sonic Anti-Bark devices?

Report this horrible person to Animal Control and if possible, have your parents video tape his activity.
One of my dogs wears a non-bark collar when he's in the back yard because he loves to bark at squirrels and not only does the barking probably annoy my neighbors, it annoys ME!
I purchased the collar from http://www.gundogsupply.com
Don't buy a collar from Petsmart. I bought one from there and it's nothing but junk. I actually used it as a 'dummy collar' while training my dog to wear the real collar and this is something the instructions will tell you to do before your dog ever starts wearing the collar. The collar cannot be left on the dog all day because the prongs will rub sores on the dog's neck. The collar is very effective because it's a self-training collar. There are five levels of stimulation and my advise is NOT to use level five. It's too high. The dog gets stimulated when the dog barks so there is no association with the stimulation and the handler.
If the dog is not conditioned to wearing the collar, the dog knows when he's wearing the collar and when he isn't. He won't bark while the collar is on but WILL bark when the collar is removed. Like I said, the instructions come with the collar and must be followed.
Good luck and please report your parent's neighbor. Poisoning ANY animal is just cruel and uncalled for and he needs to be locked up.
