| The Dreaded Housebreaking. I've had my puppy for about 2 weeks now. At first, she was really good about pooping outside, peeing on the mat. I rewarded her with a small treat everytime she did. The last two days, everytime I take her out, she doesn't do anything. No matter how long we are out there, 5, 10, 30 minutes. Within a few minutes of coming inside, she poops. I've tried to stalk her when we come in, but the moment I turn my back for just a second, she's pooped. I don't know what to do. |

| Re: The Dreaded Housebreaking. I know just what you are going through, I had my little pup from 6wks old, and we don't have a yard for her to pee/poop in, I had to try to train her to go outside (downstairs) everytime she wanted to pee, we trained her , in the end, on pee mats in the kitchen, after a while she got the idea, but not until she was at least 5 months old, she pee'd everywhere in the lounge in the hallway, all on carpeted areas, and i nearly went crazy, I tried to watch her 24/7 but you can't always catch it in time,
I nearly lost my mind, I was even thinking to myself "have I done the right thing here, getting a dog"?
BUT....... the penny does drop eventually, (by the way, I bought myself a carpet shampooer.... and with doggy deodorising shampoo there's no after smell... ) also there is a bio spray that neutralises the smell too.
Now she is almost 6 months old, and waits patiently at the top of the stairs for me to take her out, there are also little signs that she 'wants to go' like frantically licking me and licking her rear end... I know that's when we need to go too.
But now, she has the odd little accident if I don't go straight away, but overall it's worth the hassle and the anxiety.
stick with it.. the people on here gave me no end of advice and comfort, just knowing I wasn't the only one too....
I have the most loving and perfect little dog now and am ashamed that I thought about not having her...
good luck |

| Re: The Dreaded Housebreaking. One of the keys is to spend more time outside and be more active. Take it out on leash. Walk around. They can only walk and hold it so long. When it finally has to go, lavish praise on it. Don't go back immediately. Most dogs find being outside exciting and if they realized they will be taken back in as soon they go, may put it off. |

| Re: The Dreaded Housebreaking. peeing on a mat? If this is inside it is probably confusing the heck out of her. I would eliminate any mats or pee pads from inside the house. Good luck |

yup, I agree with that.
They definitely make that connection (I go potty, then we go in? sux for me) which totally works against you.
Not sure if anyone said anythiing yet but per the "Housebreaking How to" posted above, your dog must be watched at ALL times. |

When I let our dogs out in the morning, they take just a couple of minutes for a quick pee and then rush back to the front porch like they're done. If I let them in at that point, they will only want back out in a little bit.
But if I go with them and we walk around the trail about 3 laps (about 1 mile), they will pee several more times and poop. Then when I take them back in, they have completed their business and everybody is ready to relax. |
