Whining Puppy

Sometimes when Porkchop is biting too hard we put him in his crate as punishment. Because of this he whines for attention while in the crate. I would like to be able to let him out of the crate after a few minutes because I know that he will eventually forget why he was put in the crate. The problem is that I don't want to let him out while he's whining and show him that whining gets our attention.

So what do I do when he doesn't stop whining? Do I just ignore him until he stops whining and then let him out or do I let him out because he has forgotten why he's being punished?

This also applies to mornings when he whines to get our attention so we'll let him out. Do we not let him out until he stops whining then? Because he will whine forever.

Other than waiting for him to stop whining, what else can we do? We really don't want to be teaching Porkchop that by whining we will eventually let him out of his crate.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think you've already given yourself the answer. Whining stops dog comes out with praise. Whining continues dog stays in the crate. The other way.... well you've already said it yourself the dog now has some reinforcement for its actions

Ignore the whining, start it now before it becomes a major problem. In the morning I assume from what you said that he whines at you guys until you've come and taken him out. Start ignoring him, wait until he stops whining, then take him out, no matter how long it takes. Eventually he'll realise he gets out when YOU take him out, no when he whines to come out.

I've had several puppies from 10 weeks of age onwards and they ALL cried in the morning mainly because they knew they were getting fed. I did not feed them or give any attention until they stopped. They all wait calmly now, it only takes a week or 2, possibly 3 or 4 depending on the dog, but the whining will get less and less every time until it's eventually gone completely.

No matter what I read or video I watch, they always say never to use the crate for punishment so I dont use it for punishment myself. The reason why I do not put him in the crate is because I know he will whine until I take him back out and he'll think that can get him out of the crate. But when night comes and we REALLY want him to be quite, I dont want him whining for 2 hours straight and also in the middle of the night because it will wake us up so he needs to know when he's in the crate, he's staying there and crying will not get him out.

Our dog is on his 4th night in the crate and his whining is down to only 6-7 minutes now. It's been a breeze.

When we take our dog out of the crate, I will stand at the crate and will not let him out unless he calms down. I'll wait as long as he does. Then I will let him out and a big GOOD BOY!! and lots of hugs and cuddles. He knows when he's out of his crate he wont be put back in so he'll hid toys and treats in his crate throughout the day hehe. I also feed him in crate too because I want him to know that good things happen in the crate.

If the dog is biting and getting excited, just correct the behavior or hold the dog in your lap which could calm him down. We have a very, very smart and easy to train dog so these sorts of things are easy for us. I'm not sure if holding a dog while he behaves and rests is in every dogs temperment. When he starts to bite things we don't want him to (very rare for our puppy) we just tell him 'no!' and he stops. The louder the no! the more he stops.

I personally wouldn't use a crate for time outs or for any correctional training.

But I'm also a new dog owner so what do i know. I just listen to what the experts say on Youtube and dvd.

Re: Whining Puppy

What breed is your dog and how old is he?

How long have you had this dog?

Was he aquired as a puppy or as an adult?

What stimuli gets the dog to start biting hard?

PC is about a 5 mo old Brittany aquired as a puppy..

Well, I had found out that when I'm at work and others are playing with him instead of ignoring him when he bites they would use the "traditional method" of holding his muzzle. I was pissed when I found out and it stopped right then. I think this is what stimulated our problem with him biting. And as soon as I stopped the above method his consistent biting stopped as well. Now I allow him to mouth my hand but as soon as it comes close to causing pain I screech and ignore him.

I'm still unsure of using the crate as punishment. It's really the last resort if he doesn't quit doing whatever we don't want him to or if he does one thing really bad. If he whines we don't let him out, but I will stand by his crate and get him to hush. Once he listens to me I let him out.

I guess my main problem with the whining is in the morning. He's just been cooped up all night and is too excited to be with us that he won't stop! He doesn't whine until he hears that I'm awake (normally by me walking to the bathroom). We ignore him, but he won't stop, so I'll end up standing by his crate and then he'll hush, but he won't until I go in there.
I'm going to try to not go to where his crate is tomorrow morning until he stops whining. It's my day off so I'll have the time.
