| Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) Hi
When our Buddy goes poo in our backyard, we get the little garden shovel and put it into a coffee can. At the end of the week, we put it into a bag and toss it into the garbage and rinse out the coffee can. Well, now the rainy season is upon us. the poo gets well, moist and hard to pick up. I'd like to know what you guys do to pick it up. We don't want to step on it. Also, can we train our pup (3 1/2 month old) to do his dirty work in a certain area to make it easier for us?
Thanks! |

Thanks! | Yes, you most definitely can train him to go in a certain location. The training is unpleasant this time of the year, however. What you need to do is.... *violin plays* stand out in the rain/shine/blizzard with him, at the place you want him to potty, and when he starts to go potty say "go potty" and when he's done, reward him heavily.
You take him out on a leash to your place, do this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again until he potties on command. |

How important is it to keep the puppy on a leash when taking him out? I have a backyard. I'm trying to do this so she goes in the same spot, but she fights the leash. OTOH if she's not on a leash then she roams/sniffs around then may or may not go after a while. Sometimes she goes right away. I want to let her sort of roam, but know it may be a distraction away from "getting the job done". )
Just curious how others with yards have dealt with this.
Lastly, to address the original question.... once every day or two I go around and pickup using one of those spring loaded jaw-type scoopers. I drop the poo in some weeds. You could try to find some out of the way place like this. I've even seen people make composters where theres a smaller garbage can in the ground, some rock on the bottom, and a couple other details I can't recall right now.

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) Well, my dog poops in two corners, higher up in the yard where no one walks, it's not even mowed up there, it's just basically pinestraw and weeds... Also, his poos disappear after a day... As for the other dogs, they poo anywhere and theirs stay behind for almost a week...
It is gross, but my father and step-mother have three dogs versus my one, so I just avoid going in the yard... I'm not picking up after their dogs. (They wouldn't do it for mine.)
Yes, training to poo in a certain area is all about consistency, just like you can train the word "poo" and they'll go to the bathroom almost instantly, training that to an area is only adding a step... It isn't too difficult to teach, just to stay on-top of. lol. |

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) Mine have decided the yard is the last place they want to poo, they save it for their walks around the neighborhood. So I bag it and dispose of it in the trash, depending on where they do it.
In the back I pick it up and bag it for the trash, though I am seriously thinking about starting to bury it in biodegradable bags.

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) In the back yard I hardly ever pick it up. It disolves in a day or two, if I do pick it up, I bag it and toss it in the trash (thanks to RAW) and on walks, depending wher we are I pick it up and trash it. if we are out int he woods on a hike, I dont pick it up, as I really dont want to walk 10ishKM's with a poo bag in hand, and its the woods. So not some big play ground for kids or anything lol. If it is really close on the trail in the woods, I will bag it and toss the bag in to a bush/pile of logs, as it is bidegradable. |

Just curious how others with yards have dealt with this. | Keeping him on leash is just a tool to keep him in one place, as you train him to go potty. However since you mention her fighting the leash, it sounds like you have a different issue to deal with first. You need to leash train her. So put her on a leash inside the house with no distractions. If she fights it, just sit there patiently not moving an inch. When she finally lets up and stops, even for a second, reward and praise her.
Do this over and over until the puppy stops fighting the leash. Once he is good on leash inside the house, do the same thing outside. After he is good on leash there, use the method to potty train her.
Alternatively, you can do the same thing as the housetraining method. When the pup gets ready to poo, distract her and pick her up, move her to the spot you want her to go, and reward once she is done. Just do this until she associates going potty in that spot.
If you want her to roam and sniff and play a bit, just do that after she goes #2. It could be the ultimate reward for her. Once she goes potty in the spot on the leash, reward her heavily and let her go play. But make sure you train recall too. You don't want her going away from you more rewarding than going TO you |

Thanks! | When I was potty training my puppies, I didthe same thing too. But it stinks! Until I stumbled upon this website selling flushable dog poop bags . They say it's eco-friendly because they are biodegradable. I gave it a try and I found it convenient to use. they are also affordable. Maybe you want to check their site too. |

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) something else you can do to help the pup get the idea of this is my potty area is to take some garden sticks and some colored ribbon and make a 3 sided corral with the string at doggies chest level as a visual reminder of this is where I go. Make sure you pick up and hose down any areas out of that box that the dog might go. Always keep some mess in the area while you're training to stimulate him to go in that area. do it on a leash like the other poster said and praise praise praise... after a while he should get the point. I notice with my 6 dogs that they each seem to have their favorite area in the dog run to go and usually don't go in another dog's desired area... wierd huh? You can also make the potty area sand insted of grass. It makes pick up sooooo much easier. |

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) Since the day we brought our lil guy home he has peed and pooed in different areas. we have never put him on a leash in the yard (we dont have a fence or anythig) he pees in the yard that doesnt matter, but when he poos he goes over to the side of the yard were the trees are. never fails he will go poo there since day one and i think maybe jsut a few times we kept having to take him there but he got the hint. and he smells that this is where i poo. and in the ares where he mostly pees he can smell that too.
We are lucky that every time a car or ppl walk by with or without a dog chevy will just sit and watch them walk by and hes only 4 months old. Once the kids in the house arcoss the street were out and chevy started running towards the end of the yard and we just siad YEAH and he stopped and didnt go any further.
The only time hes on a leash is when we are walking him or were in public and he as to be on a leash bc he is only 4 months and he has selective hearing right now take me probably 5 "chevy come" when i want him to come inside. Hes hard headed lol
Ohh forgot one point ..we use a shovel and usually toss it in the woods. we have woods around all 3 sides of us besides the front is our street.

I'm wondering if we just can't put the poo into a coffee can and then dump it into the toilet without purchasing this product? |

| Re: Poo question (how do you get rid of it?) Don't see why not. Cider was litterbox trained as a puppy. 6th floor of an apt building and she wasn't my puppy at that time. We tossed the poop from the pads in the toilet, but there was still the pads having to go in the trash. Hard poop meant that the pad stayed down a little longer.. less waste. |
