Re: She Ran away!! Help

I too am against declawing as there are several other ways to keep the cat from scratching furniture.

Get several different kinds of scratching posts. Some cats prefer different textures, and maybe getting the few different kinds they have might help you figure out which texture it is that she prefers.

Also cats HATE having things stuck to their paws. So start sticking the sticky tape they sell at petsmart onto the areas and corners of the furniture where she is scratching. She'll learn to avoid it really fast.

The soft paws are great, but because cats nails are always growing the ones I put on my cat often fell off within a few weeks. So it became a pain to keep re-attaching them.

Keep the emergency vet's phone number handy. If this is her first litter at her age, and considering her size, expect trouble.
So what if she goes in labor at 10 and we don't get home until 3 PM
What can we do now, she is pregnant, is there anything we can do to help

Exciting??
So nine cats/kittens were PTS because of the irresponsible act of allowing your cat to become pregnant and go to homes where some of those nine that were PTS could have gone?
If she aborts the kittens, then more shelter animals could get a home.
Not much exciting about the repercussions of irresponsible pet ownership if you ask me

I do believe there are some shelters and other places that do free if not cheap spaying/neutering. I know our local humane society does it for real cheap.

Re: She Ran away!! Help

I'd like to add that in addition to always spaying females, please, cat owners- neuter your males too! It takes two to tango, so just because your male friend won't get knocked up doesn't mean you shouldn't be responsible.
If I were in your shoes, Apoirier, I would call your vet to ask about any cat pregnancy questions as well about pricing for procedure.

The size of her pelvis can be an issue. Particularly if a fairly large Tom bred with her, the kittens can be too large for her deliver without a c-section. Plenty of women having babies end up with C-sections as well.

I wanted to add in some #'s to give a better idea of why the cat overpopulation problem is so out of control.
So say the previous poster's cat had 9 kittens, out of those nine kittens, say 7 have 7 babies, that's now 49 babies and nine original kittens, you're already at 56 cats just one generation out.

Re: She Ran away!! Help

Intact females are also prone to infected uterus, which is called pyometra, and can be fatal if not caught quick enough. Pyometra is also extremely painful. If you're a female and have had monthly cramps, it's like that, but so much more painful. It's not uncommon for a small female cat to not have enough nutrients to take care of the growing kittens, which can die in utero and be a very real risk for the female's health. It's also not uncommon for a pregnant female cat to die either while pregnant, or while giving birth, because her health is compromised from carrying the kittens.

A spay is a -lot- cheaper than a C-section and caring for kittens. =)

Re: She Ran away!! Help

Umm. I don't think she is pregnant, we haven't seen any signs yet, and she is meowing a lot again like she was in heat and also pooped on the bathroom floor like she had also done before. So I don't think she is pregnant, she basically looks the same and the only sign that we might have is that she was eating more, but I don't know
