Just wonderin how much you paid for your pup..for those who bought them on a petstore

I am admitting it that we bought our puppy in a petstore .Its cuz i cant find any Animal Shelter here in our city and the nearby cities. I want to help or adopt other dogs but i dnt know where..so the last thing that could come up is to buy a puppy in a petstore.
Now I am so happy to become a new parent to my pup.He is so adorable and cute. He is a toy poodle and been here almost 2 weeks now. I want to ask those ppl who bought there puppies in the petstore on how much it cost you or you paid for your lil pup. For my experience, it was very expensive and this is real.. I paid 169,626 Japanese Yen for my 2 months old toy poodle.If I would convert it to American Dollars it would be round 1700 dollars. This includes his 1 yr. Insurance.His price was 140000 yen or 1400 dollars then the insurance and then the petstore tax..etc.. Pricey eh ??? But then we are so happy to have him so we try to forget the cost..besides i paid it using my credit card..ssshhh,,

i had mine from a breeder, cost a lil £100...cause hes a cross, would be more if he was a purebred. But i dont care how much he cost, i fell in love with him the moment i saw him!
I dont blame you getting a pet from a store, because before i had my dog, and before i came across this site i had NO idea about byb and such, some people are just not educated in those areas (me included!)

my mums fiancee/bf had his from a woman who had pups in a cardboard box on the motorway (with the mum in the car). i thought this was terrible (this was about 6yrs ago) and he had no idea about byb and that. but there again it could have been good that he did get him because they could have just been left there =(

It sounds expensive, but Tokyo is the most expensive place to live on the planet.

Ouch! Yes, in American dollars that's pretty expensive for a pet store pup. I'm not sure how people in your country feel about pet store puppies, but here in America most knowledgable dog owners are aware of the problems pet store puppies can cause to both the owner and our dog over population problem. Despite these problems, dogs are still sold in pet stores, and I've personally seen some dogs sell for as much as $800. IMO, any price for a pet shop puppies is too much. I'd rather pay for responsible breeding and not support irresponsible breeding, or better yet find a loving shelter dog. These are our options, and I'm surprised you couldn't at least find a responsible breeder in your area.

Yeah Curbside its really Ouch Ouch Ouch !!! it is really expensive here.Btw, everything is expensive here. My puppy is still a lil bit cheap if you would compare it with other toy poodles they sell here in stores. Cost from 2800 dollars to 800 dollars.the prices that i saw. I really wanted to get a pup from a Shelter or from rescue houses but they are so far from our place.my hubby said that they are in the provinces. And my hubby is a very busy man, work work work u know the usual Japanese guy.

It is one of my dream to finally own a dog here and I have to grab the oppurtunity at once cuz my husband might change his mind. Anyway, i am happy with my pup and he is well loved.

if its ok to add the link to the site where we bought our pup i would gladly show u for u to have an idea on the price ranges.And btw, lots of ppl here are saying we are still lucky bcuz we found a store that is cheap. Because lots of petstores here in Japan, the prices of pups are really so much higher.
So i guess we are a bit Lucky.

I would never recommend buying a pup based on price. The cost of buying a pup is irrelevant compared to excellent breeding practices. Reputable breeders do not sell their dogs to a pet store, that would be irresponsible on their part. But my opinion is less lenient than most. Interesting though and it makes me wonder, does Japan have a dog over population problem worth mentioning?

I really dont know Curbside but i understand what u are tryin to convey. I luv dogs and i want to help as much as i can. Its really not recomendabble to buy pups in a petstore but i didnt have a choice.

Wow that's really expensive. I only paid $600 for my corgi and he came from a reputable breeder, had champion, health tested parents, etc. lol... I didn't know there weren't any animal shelters in a city as big as Tokyo. >O.O<

I found an animal refuge after searching, but I'm geographically challenged, so I have no clue if it's anywhere near Tokyo.

I actually think Japan does have a dog overpopulation problem right now, as they seem to be breeding an excess of tiny pet store dogs for the growing demand for them.

I spent about $80 in shelter fees for Esther, then another $800 for some supplies, the spaying and some other initial vet care. Then she came home and did about $2000 in damage before we got to know each other. (I still haven't replaced that rear seatbelt in my Honda.)

And she was a bargain.

My Akita cost $400, my Shih-Tzu/Lhasa Apso cost me $120 and my Alaskan Malamute/Pitbull was free Though she was a rescue from an abusive/neglectful home and one of the best dogs I have ever owned.

A pup I'm fostering right now is an Alaskan Malamute too and he was just given to me, not in the best circumstances, but still given to me. I'm hoping to adopt him out for a small fee (just to cover his shots and Neuter before he is given to the home).

We got Zavie from a reputable and well-respected breeder of Jack Russells, with 29 years experience with the breed. She has also been involved with showing, conformation, and obedience with her dogs over the 29 years. She got out of the 'showing' part of the business a few years ago because she said 'its a cutthroat business'. Now she strictly breeds and does obedience. We have an agreement that if at any time in Zavie's life we cannot keep him, that he goes back to her. She talked to us several times before we even got Zavie. That's quite expensive. I looked into getting a pup from the pet store and it would cost have cost me $1260 for a Golden Retriever. I decided it would be better to save a dog from a rescue or shelter and now I have an adorable new puppy, who if not had been rescued by me, would have been put to sleep. Surprisingly enough, I only payed $35 for my pup. She came spayed, with all her shots, and medicine in case of kennel cough. I would strongly suggest you rescue a pet. If you cannot find a local animal shelter, look online because there are many rescue groups for a certain type of dog. Most of them ship and are cheaper than pet stores. -Danielle

Well I got Blaze from a run down gross dirty pet store. They had dead animals in cages and such. We paid I belive $500CAN (may have been $600 CAN) for him. I knew of puppy mills, but I didnt knpw that there were SO MANY and that all pet stores get them from there. I figured that Blaze was from a puppy mills. But I fell for that silly little collie pup playing in his own feces in a cage full of other puppies. So we bought him on the spot. Surprisingly though he has no health problems (knock onwood) and is now a very healthy 4 year old (Turns 4 in may)

Would I buy from a pet store again? No 99% sure I wouldnt, but I never say never. For many reasons.

All my dogs next will be from shelters or from people who can no longer keep there dogs/puppies any more or a free puppy litter.

My first Pekingese was just over $700...i did get him from a pet store. My Chihuahua was $350 from a breeder, and my 2 other Pekingese i got from a breeder as well. I went for one girl, paid $450, and the breeder asked if i would take another puppy that had a leg injury for free. I took her as well, and she will be getting spayed next month.

Would I go back to a pet store? Never. Shelter? Indeed.
