Fresh From the Shelter (Question)

Hi everyone,

I am the proud mother of a new dog. He is a 4 year old bassett hound and he has been with us approximatley 3 hours. Everything is going well, but I do have a question.

Beau has rubbed his butt across the carpet a couple of times. Now, he is up to date on all his shots. During his stay at the shelter, he was dewormed, checked and treated for all the usual doggie odds and ends.

Is he doing this simply because he has an itchy bum or is it a sign of something more troubling? We're planning to take him to the vet sometime this week for a regular check up.

In the meantime, how do we respond to the butt across the carpet?

He may need his anal glands expressed.

I agree sounds like anal glands need to be expressed.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I finally had the bright idea to do a search on the internet. *Slaps forehead.* The anal glands issue came up, so I am sure that is what it is. The nice thing is that we get a free vet appointment since we adopted him from the shelter.

Have the vet do a fecal exam on him too. I vote for the problem being anal glands too, but the worming done by the shelter might not have gotten rid of all of the worms.

certainly take your dog the vet if you have the free visit. and they will most likely tell you to bring a stool sample.

the vet at my spca gave my dog a clean bill of health. when we took her to the vet for our free visit, she was diagnosed with a level three heart murmur, and kennel cough. the heart murmur i could see being overlooked, but not to warn us about kennel cough?! pretty ridiculous.

good luck
