Help with a collar and leash

We are bringing home a Shichon in 2 weeks. Any suggestions on collars/leashes and what to look for?

Im assuming a Shichon is a shih tzu/bishon mix???? I hope so or im at a loss here...
as for collars, if its a puppy your getting, well, they grow fast and are going to go through a few collars so anything light will do for now. Leashes??? depends I guess. ( sorry kinda vague there)

I like the adjustable collars. They will last longer as they tend to have a larger span in sizes. Ammy my 4 yo Salukie only went through 2 and really she could still use her first one but it was a bit tighter then I like so she got a new one about a year ago. Now my Corgi is using her old one.

I second the adjustable collar, preferably with a snap-lock buckle. For a leash, most training schools recommend a standard 6' leash. I picked out a thin and light leash...kinda how I wanted to guide my puppy, thin and lightly. I do however also recommend having a retractable leash. Elsa can be finicky in finding that right spot to eliminate, and the retractable leash gave her the freedom to find enough room away from me for privacy. Just a thought.

I hope you're not paying a small fortune for this mixed breed dog. I also hope you realize that both Bichons and Shih-tzus can be difficult to housebreak.

Thanks for the helpful advice! I'll go check some out tonight.

Dog Advocat - I'm missing the point/tone of your message...e-mail is difficult b/c it can come across as very harsh/cynical, which I'm sure you did not intend. We are very comfortable with what we paid for our puppy, which is really what matters and yes, I have reserched breeds and I am fully prepared and educated as to challenges we may face, which would be true of any breed/mix. Have a great day!

My point was to make sure you realized that this isn't a BREED, it is a MIXED BREED. Mixed breeds can be found in shelters all over this country, usually for under $100. Irresponsible breeders who are breeding mixed breeds and selling them for five to ten times that much are cheating the public. I think it's especially concerning when they mix breeds that are so different in breed type. There are people that are breeding Bichons and Poodles, which are both very similar, but shih tzu's and bichons are not similar at all. The legs are drastically different, the faces (nose, eyes, mouth) are totally different, and when dealing with a brachycephalic breed, there are dangers of cleft palate and breathing problems. I'm not up on the shih-tzu medical problems, but did your breeder make sure that there was no inheriting of luxated lens (blindness) and bladder stones from the Bichon side of the family? Mixed breed breeders usually don't care, but you and your dog could suffer from it later.

If there was a tone to my message, it was simply BUYER BEWARE.
