help with crate training

well first off im trying to get my 10month old puppy crate trained, and frankly i just cant seem to get him to want to go in it at all anymore.

when he was a puppy we did crate him when we were gone and at night sleeping. at nights sometimes he would make such a racket, crying barking etc, i was told that we should just ignore it and he will get used to it. as he got older and we didnt have to worry about having a unexpected surprise when we woke up, we started to leave the front of crate open at night. this was probably a mistake since he started to sleep on the bed with us.

i now know this was probably a mistake but now he's getting bigger and taking up to much of the bed, so i really would like him to start sleeping in his crate, but he will absolutely not go anywhere near it. i have tried to take the top off of the crate that didnt work. i have tried to take treats to temp him to go in and say "in your crate" but that doesnt seem to work either....

Last night i started to say "Off" and kick him off the bed and, when i said Off, he would get off the bed but through out the night he tried to jump on atleast 6-10 times. after i would kick him off he would just go down stairs and i think he was sleeping on the couch. instead of anywhere in his crate.

his crate has a large fluffy pillow which is nice

please help!!!

Since you say he's not destructive, is it important to you that he sleep in his crate? If it is important, then you'll have to spend the time training him all over again. It might even mean just putting him in the crate and closing the door at bedtime if he won't stay in the crate on his own. But do spend time during the day, re-training him using yummy treats to lure him in, feeding him in the crate (and no where else for now), etc.

If it's not that important you could just put his bed on the floor next to your bed, screw an eyebolt (the type that rotate) into a wall stud and put the dog on a short tether (fastened to his buckle collar) so that he has just enough room to sit, stand, turn around and lie down but not enough tether to get tangled up in.

Re: help with crate training

well i guess its not a must he sleeps in his crate, i guess anywhere other then our bed at the moment. just we have all the stuff in his crate for him to sleep with yet he doesnt like it. also i guess it would just be nice for him to sleep in our room, make him feel like he's part of the pack. i just think that with him sleeping down stairs he might feel like the outcast of the pack

Re: help with crate training

You are pack leader, he sleeps where you tell him to sleep. But if you want him to sleep in your room, either re-crate train him or tether him so that he can sleep by but not on your bed.
