pee pads

Has anyone had any luck with these?

We have had the puppy almost 1 month. THe first week we were crate training and doing great. Since then, he has had a variety of illnesses, most currently bacterial pneumonia. The Vet recommended eliminating the crate becasue it stresses the puppy for about the first hour that he is in it and we don't want any un needed stress. We also want to be careful with how stern we speak to him after having an accident in the house (again for the stress) since he such a youngster and still timid at times. our first priority is obviously getting him healthy. he's roughly 12 weeks now so hopefully there will be time to resume training once we are past this illness, but i'm worried he'll have too much of a "routine" at that point. So i am hoping the pee pads will at lest get him go to the same spot every time if he is going in the house anyway.
Any advice is very appreciated. THanks!!

Re: pee pads

Mojo uses puppy pads that are in a litterbox (we bought one for dogs, but a cat one would work if your dog can get in it). We trained him the way you would typically train a dog to go outside but took him to his box instead--scheduled trips, praise and treats when he goes. He will also go outside if he's there and the need arises.

Re: pee pads

We have 2 little dogs (a yorkie and a maltipoo). My 8 month old will go it in on the piddle pads all the time. At first he would only pee in the little box but now he does all his business in the litter box. I perfer the pads because they are much less of a mess and much easier to clean up. You will go through about 2 pads a day though.

Re: pee pads

I used to do pads with my first puppy, and it was:

1. EXPENSIVE!!!!
2. so HARD to ween him off and go onto the grass..

You gotta rememeber, your going to have accidents for A WHILE. Unless you work your @$$ off and start early... =)

Re: pee pads

I don't think the puppy pads are that expensive really, but we only have 1 pup so it's pretty much just 1 pad per day. We bought a case of 300 pads for under $45 (including shipping).

Re: pee pads

From what I read you are doing everything a bit wrong. If you are trying to train your puppy not to go in the house the first thing you do is see how long it takes for him to have to go after you feed him. This will be about the same amount of time everytime he eats...you time him and be sure to take him out at this amount of time every time he eats. I trained my puppy this way in one week but you must always do it regularly so you may be taking him out every so many hours and you will have to drop whatever you are doing and take him out but it will pay off in the end. Never yell or try to scold a puppy for going on your rug or floor as you are just making him afraid of you. Just clean it up and say nothing as a puppy has no idea what you are talking about. If you simply take him out on schedule you will solve this problem. How your puppy got a bacterial infection ...has he had all his shots and you should not expose him to any other dogs until his shots including the rabies are finished. Be kind and loving and you will get a lot further in any training. And never Never hit him with newspaper when he makes a mistake as this is the worst thing you can do. I have a website with a lot of training tips and general information. I hope you will find it. Good luck.

Re: pee pads

When he pee's somewhere he's not supposed to, take him and kleenex it. Wipe the kleenex on the pee pad. Don't be mad. Look at him, point to the mark ( put a bit of water if you like so it shows ) and tell him how good of a dog he was to pee there and give him a treat. He'll notice when he goes there he'll get better attention then if he goes on a rug.
Dog's forget easily on where they pee so he will actually think he pee'd there.

Re: pee pads

Pee pads when the pup in the house is okay. But it is preferred that you train your pup to do his jobs outside when he is on the walks.

Re: pee pads

So the vet suggested the pee pee pads? If he is on medication and the vet didn't say to keep him in I would not use them. Then you will have to train him twice and that will confuse him even more.

Re: pee pads

Depends how much money you want to spend.

We have max on pee pads right now. He likes them.. for the most part. Accidents still happen even if we watch him. Still, he takes the big pee's on them and only tiny ones around the house... so I think its more "marking" than anything.

Back on topic, i think our situation is different. Max will pee on the pad (1 pad per pee), but he won't poop on them. We are fortunate that he wants to go outside whenever he has to eliminate ... #1 or #2.

I heard a lot of good things about pee pads. Also, if you are going to use them, buy them in bulk. We purchased a 150 pad bag at Petcetra here which is lasting us forever. The price was very reasonable as well.

I would try and get a sample first though, see if your dogs even like them. You can buy them in small quantities to start. Don't buy bulk if your dogs won't even use em.

If you want a cheaper alternative to pee pads, use newspapers. If newspapers alone don't do it, you can buy a spray to spray on it that will make him want to eliminate. Again, take all my advice with a grain of salt. This stuff is not made for every dog.

Re: pee pads

Rather than buying the dog pee pads, get the large people pads (to protect beds) at Walmart/Sams?Costco/Kmart/Walgreens. They are about 1/2 the price of dog ones.

Do put some urine from the puppy on the pad, so he will smell where to go.
