My beagle takes food out of peoples hands

I need some help training my 1 year old Beagle Roxy to stop trying to take food out of my kids hands. She also tries to get on the table to get food. I am not sure what kind of training to do with her. I am finding her digging in the trash. The kitchen trash we solved by getting one that has a lid she can't tip over but she is always getting into the bathroom trashes. Our doors are easy to open she can push them herself open.

She was rescued from a possible abusive home. She has had some issues with anxiety, and inappropriate pooping and peeing in the house. I got some wonderful advice from people here and most of those problems are now gone. If she gets sick we might see some of them resurface but she is an excellent dog with an excellent temperment. We love her dearly. She is 20 pounds and not overweight. She has food allergies and we give her a high quality food made of trout and sweet potatoe. We cannot free feed her as she will overeat. Maybe it's a Beagle thing but she always acts like she is starving and is always searching for food. At meal times (Breakfast lunch and dinner) I have to put her outside or in her kennel. Both of she hates - she paces on the back porch sometimes poops on it or cries and cries in her kennel. We are trying to teach her to sit and stay in the living room instead but it's a work in progress. If myself or my husband leave the room she is under the table begging from the kids or even trying to get on the table. My kids are old enough (3 and 7) to get there own snacks but if they are not careful Roxy will try to get them out of there hands or try to get on the table.

How do I train her to stop this? Why is she acting like we do not feed her. We feed her 3 times a day. If I put her in her crate(kennel) she cries and cries. If I put her outside she paces and I know this is her anxiety. Sometimes she poops on the step and I know this is just her stress. If I make her sit and stay in the living room I have to be right there and wait for the meal to be over petting her and loving her but she pays no attention to me. She is on alert waiting for her treat and then instantly rushes over to the table to sniff underneath and if I am not looking she will like the edge of entire table. If she could jump up there she would.

Any advice would be helpful.

Re: My beagle takes food out of peoples hands

1. Most beagles tend to act as if they're starving all the time. At one year of age she should be on one or two meals a day. You have to be careful with Beagles and weight gain.

2. For the bathroom trash you could set it up with trash and some snappy traps (available at pet supply stores) so that when she gets into it the trach can "corrects" her and she decides that it's not worth getting nipped in the nose.

3. You can bait counters and tables with snappy traps and/or items such as aluminum pie tins that will fall around her making a lot of scary noise if she tries to get food off the table or counter. And, of course, always put things away.

4. For begging and trying to steal out of hands, other than having your kids eat at the table or counter, work on long downs.

Definitely head to the Training forum and check out the sticky on Doggy Zen. That will help a lot with the food stealing.

Oh, and it's not unusual for Beagles to act as if they haven't eaten in weeks once they smell a cookie in your hand.
