Study different small breed dogs, and contact all your local purebred rescues, and discuss with them your intentions. They should be able to guide you to a dag that's right for you. Good luck!

what type of weather conditions do you have where you live, and is it going to live inside?

Robin,
all dogs should live in side so that they remain socialized and happy family members.

living outside is very dangerous for a dog:
predators
poisons
theft

to the OP- how about a shelter puppy? you get a free spay/neuter, all of the shots, and it will cost you much less.

I agree with snowshoe go to your shelter and adopt a puppy or dog and save a life but if you prefer not to go that route please do plenty of research on whatever breed you do choose to get and make sure it fits into your lifestyle. Then even more important have it either spayed or nuetered.

You can find many smaller pups at shelters or rescue groups. If you have a particular breed in mind, check the rescue groups in your area. Do a Google search.

PLEASE do not buy one from a petshop or ad in the paper. The petshop ones are more then likely dogs from puppy mills with a host of problems and backyard breeders do not care who gets their puppies as long as they make money.

And please do not patronize the "designer" breeders either - sometimes I think they are worse then the puppymills/backyard breeders. They try to justify creating "mutts" for hundreds of dollars.

Take your time, pick the right breed for your lifestyle and read all about the breed and how to take care of a puppy.

BTW its better to get a puppy about 10 weeks old - too early and you'll have a lot more problems. And smaller breeds are sometimes a lot harder to housetrain then medium/larger breeds

I also agree with the above noters.Go to a local shelter to adopt. All my pets are rescues, and are the best companions around.I also believe that your dog/puppy should be kept indoors, they are a huge part of your family, and they should get alot of attention and hugs.

www.dogbreedinfo.com is a really great website to INTRODUCE you into each of the different small breeds. They give a few pictures of different dogs, and a breif introduction into the size, health, temperament, comformation etc of each breed.

Once you think you have found one that works for you, then research it MUCH further to be sure.

There is such variation in temperament and the care needed for different breeds of small dogs that you want to make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into.
