crate size?

Hi

Following advice on here, I am now going to try to get a crate and cover it to try to deal with my Anastasia's barking and howling in the car.

Ironically I am now really struggling to find a crate I can buy here. My Anna is a medium-to-smallish female White Shepherd, stands about 60cm at the shoulder. Thats about 23.6 inches. I cannot find any clear information as to what size crate to get.

Problem is - because very few people use crates here, they are difficult to get hold of.

The only pet suppliers that had any crates, could not tell me the size or any kind of description outside of "made of wire" and "made in china".

I found a south african online store that sells crates - also, no description, no picture, only information on size: 78x58x45 cm That is - 30.7 x 22.8 x 17.7 inches.

I mailed them asking for more information, but in the meanwhile can anyone give me a rough idea if this is more or less the correct size?

I've just now had a reply from them, with a picture of the crate. Look familiar to anyone?

Re: crate size?

Sierra is a shepherd and she weighs 65lbs. She is 24 inches to the shoulder. I have a size 'large' crate for her. It almost seems too small for my liking, but she absolutely loves it. She can stand in it, turn around, and lay down.

I also have an XL large crate for Spike, and he 82 lbs. From time to time he will lay in Sierra's crate instead of his own, even though he almost spills out of it.

Both dogs will sleep 8+ hours in their crates at night. When they sleep outside, I leave the doors off and both will chose their crates instead of sleeping on the ground or in their plastic swimming pool bed.

The large crate will fit in the backseat of my car. The extra large one will not. Not sure what kind of car you have.

I cannot see your picture.

Here is a picture of the crate. The blue one is the XL crate, and both dogs can fit into it. Spike is the dog laying down, and he is actually 20 lbs heavier than Sierra, though the angle of the picture makes him look smaller than Sierra. They grey crate next to it is the large crate.

Re: crate size?

Hi lizalots - sorry about the picture not sure what's wrong with it?

I have a small pickup truck so I can probably fit quite a big crate in the car...

What are the measurements of the "large" crate you describe? I think this crate might be too small. I'm hoping they will let me try it out and return it if its not the right size...

And what a super cute picture of your dogs!

Here is the url for the website page. Maybe that will work. They seem to have just put the picture up since I enquired

Re: crate size?

Just found the tape measure. It is 26 inches high, and 23 wide.

I am not an expert at this, I'm sure someone can better tell you what size to get, but this one seems to work for Sierra.

Hahaha, she is glaring at me because I just woke her up to take her picture.

I wonder if you could buy one from a petstore and have it shipped to you??

Re: crate size?

Hey sleepy dog!

You have such cute looking dogs. They seem to get on well together! Thanks for the measurements.

Yes I'm going to have to shop around. Thing is, with our exchange rate, things get VERY expensive quickly

Re: crate size?

Oh, a wire crate! I was going to get one of those because I think that they'd be a lot cooler. However, my friend had a boxer that actually chewed through the wire. I didn’t believe it until I saw it! Right through the metal like it was nothing. I don’t think that my dogs would attempt to escape in such form, but I was amazed!

I actually found my XL one on craigslist for $50. I guess that doesn't help you. The other one we bought from a friend who didn’t need it anymore.

Good luck to you!

Edit: BTW, I don't think that going larger will harm anything if you are not actually attempting to use it as means to potty train the dog. Sierra also fits lovely into our XL crate and I would have probably opted for the larger one if the reason I bought it had been for anything other than potty training.

Re: crate size?

OK - the site have told me they also have this size available: 93x56x63cm. In inches, that's 36.6 x 22 x 24.8.

But its expensiiiiiiiiiiiiiive. It will cost me R1025. And Rands are as much as dollars in terms of how much one earns. Its the R/$ interest rate that makes it so expensive...

As far as I can tell if I was able to buy this from america, an equivalent crate would cost about $55. At the current exchange rate, that's R449. At most, a $80 would cost R653. I dont know how much shipping it would cost

Re: crate size?

If it helps, the price of my extra large crate was $140 at the store (hehehe, the price tag was still on it when I got it) and that is without shipping.

Lizalots
what a great crate picture.

Klip
the biggest you can afford and the plastic type crate is like a cave environment which most dogs like.
