Dogs and Cats

We have 2 cats ages 4 and 5 and we got our new puppy, Hudson, in Dec. My cats still are afraid of the puppy. Anyone have any advice as how to make them all friends. Also Hudson barks at the cats...any advice how to stop that????

In my experience, you have to let them all "come together" on their own. Give it time. My best advice is to make sure cats can get away from the pup if they want to. I use baby gates. If the cats are harassed by the dog constantly, they'll never come around.

As for the barking, that's pretty common in excitable pups who think the cat is a play toy...LOL. Something fun and interesting. I'd start teaching "quiet" or "enough", if it gets out of hand.

I read somewhere to use a squirt bottle with a solution of water and vinegar to stop the barking.

Hmm.. unless you've got some real finess with the squirt bottle, I wouldn't recommend that. Sometimes that backfires because some people correct inappropriately or at inappropriate times and you just end up with a dog scared of a squirt bottle. As mentioned before, this will take some time. Keep the play periods supervised and make sure the cats can escape if they feel too harassed. If you catch him barking, give him a correction sound (Nothing harsh, just a sound that interrupts the behaviour), lure him away and praise when he's got his attention on you. Over time, he'll eventually learn to co-exhist with your cats.

Yes, or in my case, my dogs LOOVEEE squirt bottles. HAHAHA. I use them in the summer sometimes and to clean the dogs up when they get a bit dirty (cause I don't like to bath too often, or have them soaked in the winter), they try and drink the water as it shoots out at them.

One more point on the squirt bottles -- if a dog becomes afraid of the squirt bottle, and then you (or your vet) has to spray on medication, or the dog goes to a groomer who uses a squirt bottle as part of the grooming process -- there's going to be problems.

Do make sure that you never allow your puppy to chase the cats.
