She's home! A tiny little mutt from the pound, I know part poodle but who knows what else?
We named her "Dory" because I was explaining to the kids how punishing her after the fact doesn't do anything...she won't remember what she did wrong and they all shouted out, "Just like Dory!" (from Finding Nemo). Cute.

One concern: When I was picking her up today, they told me that she is too small to go outdoors. I had planned on not using the wee wee pads. Yuck.
Is this lady right? It's too late to call my vet. I will tomorrow. I was a little disappointed they hadn't mentioned that to me. What do you guys think? I'm tempted to put the pad maybe just outside the back door? I really didn't want her to learn that in the house is ok.

She freaked a little when we closed the crate door. Only for a few minutes, though, and then when she got quiet I praised her. That's enough, right? I don't need to also give her a treat?

I am by no means an expert, but my son and daughter-in-law just got a yorkie pup at 8 weeks and he is 1.4 pounds and he goes outside to potty.
Of course, they are always with him while he is outside and watch him closley.

I wouldn't let her around other dog or where other dogs do their business until she's finished with all her puppy shots, but I don't think there's any problem using your backyard to potty or to begin to learn to walk on a leash.

How small is she? Did you ask the shelter person why? Could it be weather related? What's the temperature like there? It could also be because of predation. Even grown cats and rabbits have been known to be carried off by birds of prey. It's always a good idea to go with your puppy, no matter what the size, for protection and to encourage and praise her during the housebreaking stage.

Do you have a secure yard? Was there an interview process where she might have picked up on a problem with your dog being outside?

We took our puppy outside to potty. The only thing they told us was not to let him get his underside wet due to him just getting fixed. Maybe that is why they tol you to not let her out. as far as the crate goes make sure to make it a HAPPY place.

she was trying to sell me some wee wee pads and a tray to put them in. There was a little store next to the shelter. Now I am annoyed because that indoor idea is ridiculous. Our puppy has been doing great all day....7 times peeing and twice pooping in her spot outside. Everyone on this forum seemed to agree that outside is best and so did my vet. Last night was the coldest and she seemed ok...no shivering anyway. And we don't stay out for long. Business and then right back inside...
I'm going back tomorrow to return this stuff. $20 for a bag of pads and $15 for the tray. I'm cheap. And aggravated that she told me I had to train indoors.
Oh, and whoever suggested the sand for her spot...thanks! I went out today to get a bag of fine mulch and sand to fill in the area and she seems to get the idea. I'm jinxing myself now.

Our 2 pups were 8 weeks old when we brought them home and they both weighed just under 2lbs. Our weather is the coldest it has been in a long time......around -20 degrees celcius and our pups have gone potty outside since day one! We carry them out to their spot and set them down so their pads on their feet don't freeze and after they do their business we pick them up and carry them back inside. They are doing well with the potty training and the cold weather doesn't seem to have hampered that at all. Congrats on your new little one and enjoy!

my 2 pups are beagles. They are always barking and jumping on people. It drives me crazy!! Please help me!
