car riding options

He's getting a little big to be in my lap anymore, and when he moves around especially not so safe. I'd like to keep him in the back of my SUV. Im a 'neat freak' when it comes to my cars so rather him not be wandering around car or chewing on my leather seats.

been looking into options. first, is the barrier with the floor mat. he's not so good with confinement yet, so i think he'd still be able to stick his mouth through bars and chew on back of seat.

so im wondering if i should just get another wire crate specifically for the rear of the car. it seems that would hold him in the best without risk of car damage, while me driving safe, and him being safe.

thoughts? experiences?

They have covers that basically make a U that covers your seat and the back of your front seats that the dog sits on so hair and such doesn't get on the seat and so the dog can't chew. They make them so that you can hook a harness to the seat belts through a hole too.

Ah ha, I looked it up. It's called a pet travel hammock.

The safest way for your dog to travel is in a crate. The 2nd safest is using a harness that works with your seatbelts. You can get protective seatcovers to prevent chewing on your seats and dog hair accumulation.

I bought a large folding wire crate for the back of my minivan. One dog blows her anal sacs as she loses her balance sitting on a car seat and the other used to get car sick. Technically I can fold the crate to use the area for large items. I really think they are safer in the plastic crates but I do prefer the better air flow and better visibility the dogs have in the wire. I can leave the rear hatch and windows open and the dogs are safe and as cool as possible. They cannot jump out as I open the rear hatch. I put a scrap of carpet on the plastic pan. I miss petting them but really it is safer and more secure for all of us!

I vote get another metal crate for the back!

I have a small-ish sedan and I bought Maisy a harness for the seatbelt (it's like a regular walking harness except it has a loop at the top you can stick the seatbelt through. It lets her lay down and move around, but it keeps her pretty well confined.

The only thing, though is that she really doesn't like it, so it's hard to put on because she knows what it is. But once it's on it works like a dream.
