Bones!

hey folks quick question. My new pup just got neutered and im trying to find ways for him to occupy his time without the strain of play. My dad picked up acouple of big soup bones. Although i have read cooked bones are bad news for dogs i do cook them in the microwave for a few just until the meat isnt raw inside. Is this a bad idea? Can i just feed him the soup bone as is with raw marrow and beef? suggestions please THANKS!

Re: Bones!

Cooked bones will splinter and hurt your dog very often.. please dont cook bones you give your dog. Its ok and maybe a good idea even to rinse and even a few seconds in boiling water if you worry about germs, but lots of people feed raw chickens, turkeys, etc.. so no worry.

Re: Bones!

You should just feed the whole bone raw. Meat and all. Don't worry about any germs on the meat -- the stomach acid of dogs is strong enough to kill all of them. They don't stand a chance.

Re: Bones!

RAW only! Don't put them in the microwave. The little bit of meat and fat on there isn't going to hurt, although do be aware that the marrow can cause loose stools in a dog who isn't used to getting it.

Re: Bones!

I wouldn't think a few minutes in the microwave would be enough time to cook the bone to the point of splintering. I would feel safer for my families health since I do have a 1 year old that touches everything. Many experts disagree that raw is without risk. I know many people do it anyways.

Re: Bones!

What about beef bones you purchase in the pet stores?

My dogs like them. But recently a friend of ours said they are dangerous and she wouldn't give them to her dog.

I thought, "If they are dangerous, why are they sold in all the stores?"

What do you folks think?

Re: Bones!

I would not give my dog a bone that is processed in any way by heat. Not only does it make the bone more likely to splinter rather than crush, but adding heat also makes the bones so hard that they might break a dog's tooth. And although I feed a raw diet I would never give my dogs the weight bearing (mostly leg bones) of anthing larger than a turkey. Those bones are just too hard and likely to chip a tooth.

Stores sell them because people buy them.

Cigarettes are sold in stores. So are knives. Plenty of things dangerous are sold in stores - and there's a lot less regulation in regards to what's sold to pets. Rawhide is dangerous too, and plenty of pet food and pet toys get recalled.

Put the dog and the raw bone in the crate, and supervise the baby. A 1-year old still takes long naps right? He can have the bone then, and afterwards clean the crate and the kid can come out after.

Re: Bones!

I doubt it will affect them at all. I guess the only thing I can think of is that some dogs reject raw bones initially because they don't know what to do with them. I've never had that problem.

It depends on the size of the bone some dogs will swallow the whole thing or chew it all up or simple abandon it. People who feed raw should include uncooked bone to the dog's diet to keep the ratio protein vs calcium in balance.

If you are feeding full raw without bones, the dog is not getting enough calcium. He can suffer some kind of joint problems later on so that is why it is very important that he is getting all different nutrients. Also, he shouldn't be eating only steak and chicken, but buffalo, kangaroo, and other meat sources.
