I need an advice

Hi there!
I am new to this forum, and acctualy I don`t have a dog, but I want to take some puppy, so I am here to get some help from you guys.
I alredy have one pet - it`s a budgie, and I have him for 8 months. He is flying around all they long, he is not in the cage, except in the night, for sleeping.
You can see some photos and videos from him (he is talking!) at www.flickr.com/photos/mitici
So, now when I am thinking to take another pet at home, acctualy mini pinch puppy, is it a good idea?
I live in a smaal appartment, and me and my husband are working from 8AM to 4PM, so that means that our pets will be left alone 8 hours a day. Is it a good idea to have a mini pinch and uncaged budgie together alone?
My budgie is used to be free, now I will not be happy put him in the cage, BUT I lLIKE to have a puppy a lot. Mini pinch is so little, so I thought it is a good idea to have a little dog in a small apartmant, but maybe you have some other suggestions?
I need an advice, please.

Re: I need an advice

I'm assuming here that you're talking about a Miniature Pinscher (often called a Min Pin). If so, the answer is no, having the dog alone with the loose bird would be a very bad idea.

In the first place if you get a puppy the puppy should never be allowed to be out free in your apartment unsupervised. This could be disasterous for your apartment and potentially deadly for the puppy. It would be like leaving a baby or toddler without supervision.

In the second place, MinPins are very terrier-like and often have a high prey drive. A flying bird would be a great temptation. If you get a pup you'll need to confine the pup preferably in a crate or ex-pen and you'll need to confine the bird to a separate room once the pup has earned house freedom when it's old enough.

Yes, I was talking about Miniature Pincher.
What do you mean by saying this "puppy should never be allowed to be out free in your apartment unsupervised". How you guys left your puppies in your apartments?

not puppies.

Adult dogs that are proven trustworthy at times can have free roam.

Crating or closing off a room to confine the puppy when not home is the only way to go

I also agree, a min pin is a bad idea with a bird.

Puppies should never be left unsupervised. They need to be confined so they don't get into things that could make them ill or possibly kill them. Also, a puppy will not be house trained and you'll end up with messes all over the place. Also, having a loose bird in your house is going to be a huge temptation for a dog, puppy or adult. I don't see how that could have a happy ending.
