Puppy won't pee where i want her too

Hello,

We just got a 10 week old golden retriever and she is such a good girl. She can hold her pee for long period of time. However we are having trouble getting her to pee in one spot in the backyard. We would like for her to go on the gravel instead of the grass, she is killing the grass. But when we bring her to that spot she just runs off and does it somewhere else. I was wondering what i can do to get her to pee there. The gravel covers an area of 5 feet by 20 feet and is surrounded on three sides by our garage and fence. Would it be ok to close the area off so she has to go in there? And would i carry her to the location for the first week or so?

That's exactly what I did with my dogs. We recently made a sandy area where I prefer them to eliminate. For the first few weeks I took them to the area and my husband fashioned a small gate to cover the opening. Once they eliminated they got immediate verbal praise and a small treat. I think it is best for training purposes to stay nearby so that you can give the praise and treat immediately...then the dog associates the act with the reward.

Durbkat has a little shameless behaviour in the past

I would just take her out on a leash to the spot where you want her to go. Thats what I did when I trained my dog to go in a certain spot when I took him out.

We have trained 3 females to potty in one specific part of our yard. The first was an adult when we moved here and we just said this is your potty spot and she pretty much got it right away..... The other two were babies and we would walk them to the spot on a leash and say (over and over and over) go potty..... When they did go potty..... we would act like it was the best thing anyone in the entire world had done..... We would then give a bit of a treat. I would normally break a puppy milk bone into 2/3 pieces and give the pup a small bit after pottying..... My Bailey became so smart about the whole potty adventure that she would watch our hand while pottying to be sure that we had a treat. She even began to fake potty so that she could get a milk bone. After you feel certain (and it could be a month or so) that your pup knows where the potty area is..... let her go on her own but go with her.....If she potty's where she is not suppose to pick her up in the middle of it and tell her this is where you go potty. After a while the praises should be enough and then before you know it she will just go where she is suppose to. Believe me....it does work!
