Chew things

Hi, my pup doesn't really seem overly thrilled about the Nylabone I've provided for her. She likes the rope thing but what other kind of bone can I give her? I know that rawhide isn't good for them...but what about those hooves? What things should I absolutely avoid? Are bones from the butcher ok or does it depend? Newbie here!

Re: Chew things

Bones from the butcher are okay, but I would wait until she is not a baby anymore. Bully sticks are good and come in a lot of sizes, although a lot of owners don't like their dogs chewing on them because of what they are. My vet has told me that a lot of the pig products can have samonilla but it is very rare. I've personally never had a problem with them.

Re: Chew things

The main thing is to always watch the dog when it has a chew. My dogs are fine with pig and cow ears, bully sticks, all those dried animal bits like tracheas and raw beef rib bones but I will not give them man made chews like greenies or hard large bones. Other people like to give those chews. My dogs prefer kongs smeared with a bit of peanut butter to nylabones. My dogs want to change the chew, the ones that don't get chewed up aren't very interesting to them.

I take chews away when they can fit in the mouth or the dog is trying to break the chew rather than chew it. Try smearing something nice on the nylabone, once she is chewing she may like it.

Talking Re: Chew things

We have a 3 month old lab/cocker spaniel mix and she loves the pig ears and the hoofs, however the hoofs really stink and make her breath really stink . . . but she loves them. Also I get those pedigree bones that have a filling in the middle of them or the busy bones and she likes those too. Another thing that I got is the dental kong and a regular kong- and fill them with different things and then freeze them. You can google kong filling recipes and get a few results. She loves them kongs and is at them for a long time. I am also always trying to find different LONG LASTING chew toys for her. Good luck!
