Housebreaking Intermediate Level

I have a 4 month old girl bichon poo. She knows how to relieve herself on to the puppy pads which is in the kitchen. However, there are times that she misses he aim. She would pee and poo in between the floor and the puppy pads. How do you fine tune your puppy to potty train acurately?

Also, how do you ease your puppy from training pads to going outside?

Thanks for the tip and advice!

Re: Housebreaking Intermediate Level

It's best to decide on one method and stick to that. It's much less confusing for the dog that way.

1. Put everything on a schedule including food and water (don't give less, just schedule when.

2. Take the pup out to her potty area (or to her pads) on a regular basis (there's that schedule again).

3. When you can't watch her like a hawk she should either be confined, preferably in a correctly sized crate, or tethered to you. She should have absolutely NO unsupervised freedom at this point.

4. If you catch her in the act of going in the wrong location you must correct her each and every time (thus the need for constant supervision). AND you must praise her when she goes in the right spot.

5. Clean up any accidents with an enzyme cleaner to destroy the odor at the molecular level.

6. Be patient and consistent. House breaking takes time and there will be mistakes but as long as you're persistent she will get it eventually. And, don't forget, she still doesn't have complete control of those muscles.

Are her pads inside right by a door? That will help, since if you see her moving in that direction, you can open the door and call her outside.

I believe that most folks put down a puppy pad outside, and praise profusely for using that pad.... then slowly cut down the size of that pad outside, till the puppy will go on the grass without a target.

Crate training while inside the house will help too -- take her outside as soon as you let her out of the crate, so she has an opportunity to go.
