Teaching puppy to do steps

Today I want to work with Jack to learn the steps in our house. Jack is a 13 week lab mix. We got him Wednesday evenigg and so far he has been confined to the basement. I'm understanding his movements(housebreaking) enough that I think we can move to the upstairs (main living space of our home). We are in a split level ranch, so there are 6 steps, a landing, and then 7 steps. So far I can get him to go up and down the first set of six steps, then just turns and goes back down, or sits on the landing, then returns back down. If he can do the first set, why won't he do the second set?

He knows what is up there as we had him upstairs for a fair amount of time yesterday (he was carried up and down). With a 26 lb growing dog, it won't be long before carrying is not an option ! LOL!!!!!!!

Any suggestion? Thanks !

Re: Teaching puppy to do steps

Is he on leash when going up and down the first level? If he is, does he just refuse to go on?

We live about 50% of the time in our motorhome. Of necessity, we have taught our 4 m/o Pyr/malamute mix pup to go up and down the steps. I just couldn't carry him any more. (I can still pick him up, but felt very unsafe going up and down steps with him.) I do know that going up and down steps in general isn't good for a growing pup, but had no choice in this.

How we did it: first of all, he's on leash. (He's actually almost always on leash right now, as it is the best way to keep track of where he is, and allows us to supervise him better. We keep him near us at all times)

Second, I used treats to keep him interested in going down. Lots of encouragement and praise too! One step at a time, and I sort of supported him to keep him from stumbling and falling down. Going up, I used treats again, placing them on each step, and assisting him in getting started. I can lift him up the first step, to get him started, with his front feet on the step, and then I lift his rear end.

We just worked on it little by little. He does them well now, well enough anyway, and we still support him and stay close, because being a puppy, his feet get in his way sometimes. We don't want him to trip or stumble, and fall.

So, we stay right close, use treats, take it one step at a time. I DO NOT expect him, nor want him, to BOUND up or down right now. Just don't want to injure him; this works well enough. The only thing we had to do was find a way for him to get in and out of the motorhome without having to carry him. And to do it safely.

Good luck.

Re: Teaching puppy to do steps

We tried using the leash to begin with but he just sat down and wouldn't budge. So we later tried without the leash and leaving him to try on hus own. He won't go at all if I'm there trying to help. If I'm out of sight Jack is more likely to want to try to find me.
For the upper set of steps we were trying little treats to encourage him up......didn't work.
We will try again later.
Thanks, Kim

Re: Teaching puppy to do steps

I've always baited each step with really good treats and then walked away. That way, they can take it at their own pace and if they're physically able to negotiate the steps, they'll take the bait.

Re: Teaching puppy to do steps

Success !!!
I bated the steps on and off all day, with no luck. It took my 3 & 6 yr old daughters teaching him to make it happen. LOL!!!! He is really attached to my girls and will do about anything to make them happy.
He is still clumsy on the coming down the steps, but with practice I know this will get better. At least now he is willing to try the steps.
Thanks for all the help.
