Brushing Dog Teeth and Chocolate

Howdy, my name is Sam. No, I'm not from South I'm from Wisconsin. Well anyways, my new dog, a rare Creme Chow Chow puppy, only 8 weeks, is a cute, fluffy, smells good dog with BAD breath. Well, not anymore. I brushed his teeth using regular toothpaste. I used a regular plastic brush and put a little more than a pea ammount on there and put it in his mouth, a little bit got smushed into the brush and I washed it down with water.

The main ingredients are Sorbitol and Water. He is about 10 lbs or less. For ingesting the toothpaste, a little more than a pea sized, (excluding the little bit he didnt get which got smushed into the toothbrush) will it harm him?

I've also heard Chocolate kills dogs but my dog Otis has been eating chocolate for years (obviously not a whole bar or anything but just like, a bit) and I always get worried when feeding it to him but he is always fine, he is a Pugeranian (Pug+Pom)

I'd like some answers if you can. I got all three in my bedroom and this little Chow is feisty and energetic.

The toothpaste itself may not harm your pup, but it may give him an upset stomach, and he may vomit. A typical puppy would not have horrible breath. Is the breath you're complaining of just puppy food breath? If not, your dog should see a vet, as any other bad breath may need medical treatment. It's great that you're brushing your dog's teeth at such a young age. Until your dog gets his adult teeth in, it may not be necessary to use a doggie toothpaste, but it's good to get your dog use to this activity.

As far as chocolate is concerned, it is toxic to your dog, and it depends on your dog's weight before it becomes deadly. It's better to not find out what you're dog's limit is, and just avoid feeding your dog chocolate.

I would avoid chocolate altogether.

If you still want to give your dog "chocolate", you should go to the grocery store, to the baking isle, and pick up a bag of carob chips. It's a chocolate substitute (tastes to me like very sweet dark chocolate) and doesn't contain the harmful chemical that affects dogs. You can also have some yourself which is nice. >^_^<

Chocolate IS poisoneous to dogs and cats if eaten in quantity. Doesn't take a lot to kill them. The darker the chocolate the worse/toxic it is - baker's chocolate is very deadly.

So stop feeding your dog ANY amount of chocolate. Keno get a bite or two of brownies one time (she's a lab). She was lucky the only thing that happened to her was 2 days of yucky diarahha! But we are very careful to be sure she doesn't get any chooclate.

The toothpaste issue - do NOT use human toothpaste for your dog - it can make them sick. (And how are you washing it down with water?). If you want to brush your dog's teeth, then get the toothpaste that is made for dogs.

I do hope all your dogs are neutered/spayed, especially the mixed ones.

Odie is neutered. The other one named Fatty <.< isn't spayed.

Our Wal-Mart didn't have doggie toothpaste and he simply drank water to get it down.

I actually thought human toothpaste had something in it that wasn't good for dogs... Years ago, when I couldn't find dog toothpaste, I mixed baking soda and peroxide into a paste and brushed their teeth with that lol...

You can order doggie toothpaste online, or they should have it at your local petstore.

Do you swallow your own toothpaste????
