Unhappy Burdoc

I'm not a first time dog owner,I have had dogs/pets all my life. However I have a rescue dog (cocker/cavalier king mix). I found a house in the country to give him room to run. Its late Dec in MN and not mush snow yet this year. Baby loves it out here (no more leash) we can run and play together he has a ball, but he has found burdock and has two in bedded in his fur, ( left side, and under right ear)....Please how do I remove them? He's an abused dog and although he trust me he can get aggressive and has toward others who try to pet him. When I adopted him I was told he would not allow anyone near him, when Dawn handed me his leash it was like he had found his long lost friend. He licked me and jumped in my arms, it was like I had raised him from a pup. Dawn his keeper at the shelter was in shock as she thought this dog would never find a home. I want to maintain this trust and wish not to cause him undo stress and pain. Any tips will be most appreciated. Thank you

Bless you for all you're doing for this rescue dog. But I'm at a loss -- what is burdoc(k)? All I could find on the web was that it's a root that gives some sort of oil. That doesn't sound like what you're asking about.

the best way that i have found to get out burdocks is (when there is only a few) just ease the hair out of it and toss it in the trash (so they don't get it bac in their fur)......this takes a little bit of time and if he is real skittish i'd sit down and hold him in you lap and give massages at the same time (great for the bonding).....if there are a lot of them in the same area (and at this time of the yr you shold only be dealing w/ dead ones) take some baby oil and "rub" it in the area then take a "rake" comb (pet stores carry them) and slowly brush it all out....

this is the best way i can tell you w/ a skittish dog that has been abused.....

Thank you

Love the poem, thank you for your advice it seems to be working. I'm locating the burdock as much as I can and cutting it down but he seems to find more. He pulled some out of his leg this morning and now has a cough, I gave him bread and butter with a warm broth chaser,(home made no salt). I hope this is OK. I don't normally feed dogs bread.

It is the same only what grows above ground (the bush) has large marble sized/shaped stickers on it. This is what he has caught in his hair. Thank you for you kind words. He is a good dog,I hope to make him happy.

Smile burdock

burdock is a lot like culkel bur in missouri it makes a mess out of long haired dogs , sheep wool and horse tails when i work on getting it out of hair i put a little baby oil where the bur is and take a fine tooth come and work it out a little at a time your dog is a rescue so you may have to work a little at a time when he gets tired of you working on him let him have a treat and leave it a lone for a bit burs are hard to controll so good luck with them also if you burn the ones you pull up it might germanate the seeds you might want to check with conservation to see what is best wat to rid your place of them

I'm not familiar with this, but I do thank you for the explanation. Groomers sometimes use baby powder to ease mats out of dog fur, so you might want to try that and see if it works. You might also get better results if you'd post this question in the Grooming section.

Good luck.
