Puppy potty issues

I know its just going to take time and effort but GEERRRRR my puppy went 3 days with no accidents and today we had about 5..... I was wondering how people train their dogs to do their duty outside. I don't want to use the stick the pups nose in it cause thats just cruel but it really is frustrating when she was just outside. I know shes a puppy and that there will be plenty more mistakes but im just looking for a consistent technique that will give reasonably quick results... Thanks for the input.

Re: Puppy potty issues

From all that I read I think the most important thing is patience and praise... when she goes outside be very excited and praise her and giver her treats.. Dont stick her nose in it..

My little one knows how to tell us she needs to go outside... she sits by a certain glass door and we let her out... when we are not in that room it can be a bit harder... but you just have to keep an eye on her. When my little one pees on the floor I know its my fault for not watching her and keeping track of when she last peed.

Re: Puppy potty issues

I have similar issues, my pup pees in the house all the time starting to get really frustrated with it now and losing my temper.

Its frustrating cause its not that she does not get out to go she seems to wait till she is in the house, This morning i woke up took her out to the back hard she pees on the door step i tell her NO taker her out the yard and she pees on patio i say NO then she pees on the lawn great i praise her say good girl rub her etc etc, i wait for her to eventually do a #2 in yard again praise her say good girl.

We go back in the house i start to get my breakfast walk in the living room and she is peeing again in the living room.

This happened yesterday as well but she also went #2 in the room.

I have tried putting her in the back yard when i get up and just leaving her there while i get showered for work etc then get her and bring her in but again once in she seems to find some where to pee.

This has been going on for the last week.

No intention on hijacking this thread sorry just thought might be easier to keep pee problems in the same area.

Re: Puppy potty issues

Puppy owners must have a full and complete understanding of the word VIGILANCE. True vigilance does not include the puppy being out of your sight long enough to sniff, or squat (especially in another room)!!!!! And many make the mistake of allowing too much freedom for their young, untrained, pups. I do not allow any pup out of my sight or arm's reach until they are several months old and have proven themselves reliable in the housetraining department. This level of vigilance is not easy, it is in fact demanding, but IT WORKS! Take heart and know that the more committed you are, the faster they learn.

I would also add that sometimes puppies get confused about the yard being a "potty area" when they also use the yard as a play area, training area, rolling in the mud area, etc.... Sometimes it helps to use a plan like this: use the back yard as a potty area and the front yard as play area. Or perhaps the far north coner of the back yard for potty and far south corner for play... you get the point. just try to take the confusion out of it for them.

This is a very good approach. I used it to train Ringo to potty only in one spot of the backyard.
