New Blue

Hello I have just joined the forum not to long ago. I have recently got a new pup for me and my boyfriend (mostly for me) . She is 10 weeks now and a Blue Heeler. She is a good dog and very smart, I am looking forward to some good years with her.

This forum has been VERY helpful. Giving me tips on some problem areas that we have found... walking on a lead (or not walking in this case), Peeing inside, and whining. Its nice to know I am not alone.

We have LOTS of time for this little girl. She comes to work with me each day, I work in an office but I take her for an hour walk in the morning so she is nice and tired and sleeps most of the day. I just take her out for pees when she wakes up from her naps. She also has lots of toys to play with, when she decided so wake from her slumber.

She also comes on an hour walk with me on the way home from work each day as well... with LOTS of playtime at night with me and my boyfriend so she is nice and tired for bedtime. We have her sleeping in our room with us as we tired to have her sleep on her own but she just howled and we have to many neighbors to let her carry on like that. We have started to train her to be on her own. Putting her in the spare room with toys etc. for an hour and then longer and longer. She whines a bit but we ignore her. We do this during the day so hopefully she will learn that its ok to be on her own.

She eats 3 times a day... I am not to sure when I need to cut that down to 2 and then one... should look that up.

She loves everyone and has to meet people on the street. I dont like this habit and I am trying to get her to stop but I am not to sure how.

ANYWAYS thats some of my story of ROO.. if anyone has tips etc.. would love to hear!

This is Roo on the beach, being a bat dog.

Re: New Blue

Welcome to DF. Roo is a little doll, I'm sure you will have lots of fun with her. She is really too young for you to be taking her to public places. She needs all of her vaccines to protect her from picking up distemper, parvo or Bordatella. Good luck with your pup.

Re: New Blue

What a cutie! Blue Heelers can be a challenge, she needs to see/hear/smell/touch new things/dogs/people everyday. It is a balancing act between safety now and your future well behaved adult dog. Both of you are very lucky to be able to take her to work with you daily! That is a huge advantage in socializing.

Re: New Blue

Aw, look at that face! So adorable. I love her ears.

I was going to say the same as Patt, it is not safe for her to be out in public when she hasn't had her shots.

Here is a recommended schedule for vaccinations:
http://www.weim.net/emberweims/Vaccine.html

If Roo goes anywhere that other dogs have been, or anywhere where there are people that have touched dogs that aren't up to date with their vaccinations, she could contract something really nasty and die within days. I really don't mean to scare you, but this is of paramount importance to your puppy's health.

Here is a sticky in our training forum on how to train your dog to greet guests politely:
http://www.dogforums.com/3-dog-train...eet-guest.html (Training Dog to Greet Guest Politely)
Have you considered enrolling Blue in a puppy class? It's a great way for her to meet other dogs and make friends, as well as introduce structure into your relationship in a fun way, and help you bond.

She is really gorgeous and it sounds like you are well-prepared to provide her with a fantastic life. Keep the pictures and updates coming!

Re: New Blue

Hey all... thanks she is a cutie

She has had her first round of vaccinations and we go back in a month to get the boosters. I forgot to mention that!

I was thinking about getting her into classes, just not sure if they do them in my town as its pretty small. I think it would be fun.

She is doing really well and is very social with other dogs. We are just trying to train her to be alone thats the main thing at the moment. She learns so fast its crazy! She is smart but stubborn.

She doesnt really like going for walks all that much. She is ok once we get going but she protests when I try and leave the house. How old are dogs once they realize how good a walk is?

I couldnt help but post another pic!

Re: New Blue

Make walks super fun for her...take out toys and play with them at the beach, do some training with treats, let her meet new people and dogs, etc.
