Traveling (hotel) with the pups?

I'm sure there's got to be some people who have traveled with their dogs and stayed in a hotel here.

Does anyone have any opinions on staying in a hotel with their dogs? Have you/would you do it? If you have, did things go well, did you leave them alone there?

In October, my sister is getting married and it's going to be up north...about 3 hours away from where we live. We probably won't want to drive all the way home after the wedding, so we will have to stay the night.

I was thinking instead of trying to find someone to come in and watch the dogs, we'd bring them with us. We usually have family watch the dogs/cats when we're gone and since they will all be with us we'll need to find someone and it will be so much easier to just have someone pop in to feed the cats than have someone watch the dogs.

I have researched a bit and I'm not positive where the wedding is going to be (we JUST found out), but there are a couple hotels in the area that allow pets.

I would assume that we'd be leaving the dogs in the room for a number of hours alone while we're at the wedding/reception and that should be all. I'm not sure yet what else we need to go to as far as the wedding stuff goes...so I'm not sure how long they will be left alone.

I just figured they'd rather be with us there then be stuck here, locked up, with strange people in and out to feed and let them out.

Haven't made any reservations or anything yet. I'm just thinking about it right now. We're really not "take your dog everywhere" people, but we do take them to the lake during the summer and they would probably enjoy going to a park/lake up north.

This would be the first time we'd be taking them with us anywhere like this. We go to the lake, but we stay at my in-laws cottage and the dogs sleep in the basement (with my husband since Topaz won't settle down there without someone with him).

Thanks in advance

I haven't done it yet but may be doing so in the next few weeks. I would bring their crates if you can and if they are normally crated to use while you're out of the hotel room. Also, this can be a good resource:

Maggie goes everywhere with me. LaQuinta, Westin, W, Comfort Inn to name a few take dogs. I don't bring her crate with most of the time, I just put a do not disturb sign on the door so maid service does not come in. I also bring a portable fan with to drown out the noises in the hallway of the hotel and leave the TV on for her. Been doing it for 7 years and never had an issue.

Read the fine print carefully (or be prepared to break some rules). Many hotels do not allow dogs unsupervised in rooms.

Re: Traveling (hotel) with the pups?

I've done it. Wasn't a problem except for the motel room being too hot once. I usually leave the TV on and put the do not disturb sign on the door.

Most motels rules say you can't leave the dog alone... I've done it though and seen many others do it.

Thanks everyone who responded! I will definitely check out the site that Chicster posted. I think I've seen it before.

I'll have to call ahead and get all the rules and everything. Good idea about the fan!

I think we're going to end up making a weekend of it and see what the cities have to offer. It will be beautiful up there with the fall colors too!
