How old to start training?

Hi all, just a quick question here. How old should a pup be before you start to train them to sit and stay and such?

Re: How old to start training?

As soon as you get them. Stays are almost impossible for puppies so the sits and downs are for like 2 seconds and then they're up again. That's OK. You're just introducing the commands/concepts. Those are really boring things for a puppy to do (sits/downs).....they would much rather run and chase so, teaching Come at this early stage is really easy and a huge step forward in your training program.

Re: How old to start training?

I charged the clicker and taught Lizzie (and all her brothers :P) to target my hand when I visited her litter when she was 5 weeks old.Dogs are never too young to start training as long as you keep it positive, make sure they're physically capable of what you're asking, and remember the attention span of a puppy is really, really short- I kept most of my training sessions under 3 minutes when my guys were babies.

Correct on the short attention span lol. I usually only make my pup sit 2 or 3 times a session maybe twice a day.

When she gets older, how do I go about making her stay?
