Puppy peeing in crate

I got another puppy, not the one pictured here, from the shelter and he is 4 months old Lab/Hound mix. He HATES being in the crate and he also has very serious seperation anxiety which I can deal with and I know will get better but the bad thing is he constantly pees in his crate and sits in his own pee. I have to clean his crate and bath him every day and it is wearing me down.

Any ideas what can be done?

Re: Puppy peeing in crate

Do you have any bedding or towels in the crate? If so remove them. Also limit his water intake before you put him in the crate. Example is if bedtime is at 10, pull his water at 7-7:30 and walk him right before you put him in his crate. At 4 months old he should be going outside in the middle of the night as well. He can not hold it for more than 4 hours or so at that age.

Crate size also is a key. The crate should only be large enough for him to be able to lay down and turn around. Anything larger than that and he will find an area in it to go.

Re: Puppy peeing in crate

Bedding or not makes no difference, he still pees in crate. Limiting water also makes no difference. He only pees in crate when I leave the house, not at night when sleeping. He goes pee about 15 times a day. I only leave him in the crate for no more than 2 hours (usually one 1 hour) but I suspect he pees soon after I leave because he is having speration anxiety and the pee is all over him. Crate size is fine. He does not mind sitting/lying in his pee.
