New adoption

Hi. I just adopted a new toy poodle 4 days ago. He is 8 months and I adopted him from a private pet adoption at pet co. The Lady who I adopted him from said he was taken to the shelter by Breeders and he is crate trained.

When I took him home and locked his crate he didn't go as crazy as other people describe about their new dogs he just happily spun around in circles.. for hours. the whole night the 1st night he just spun non stop. When i cover his crate with a blanket he growls and yaps a little and quiets down and spins around when i look at him. I let him out when he is sitting quietly.

He's also pooped and peed in there three times today. I know he hates his crate. He is a very good sweet boy and loves being next to me. He will not come to anyone else and follows me around to sit on my lap. he is a little timid with new people. He is very calm but whines and yaps when I am out of his sight for too long.

He also coughs when he drinks water since the 1st day i got him. I took him to the vet and now he is on medication for a sore throat.

I try to keep him occupied in his crate with toys and a dried pig ear for bone which he loves to chew on but 90 percent of the time is just spinning and he wont stop, when he does he will yap. Also I can't tell if he understands the word no or a lower voice. I will say NO but he will keep on doing what hes doing. I know hes not deaf because he comes when I call him. please help me figure this out. thanks

Re: New adoption

Dogs don't understand what the word 'No' means. You can say 'no' over and over again to him but for all he knows you could be saying 'yes' or 'rabbit' or 'cowboy'. You need to back it up with body language and tone. A lower, firmer voice, and more assertive body language (going right up to him, leaning forward, squaring yourself, maybe pointing a finger or clapping - no grabbing or hitting) will help him understand that you are unhappy.

It sounds like he is spinning out of boredom and hyperactivity. How long does he get walked each day? I think you already mentioned in your other post that you know pig ears aren't very good for him. I replied to that thread about other chews that will keep him busy while he's crated.

Re: New adoption

I make sure i take him out for a good long walk 20-30 minutes before i bring him in once in the morning and once in the evening. He still spins around whenever i look at him. and he will only sleep when he is next to me. How do i get him to stop doing this so both he and I can get a good nights rest.

Re: New adoption

he sounds very very hyper, or maybe he's releaving stress. put him in the crate as little as possible. As for pooping everywhere, watch him closly, dogs astart sniffing like crazy when they need to go. When you see this, grab his leash and head for the door and use a really common word like "outside" or "go potty."
be carful with pig ears, puppies have really sensitive digestion and I've found pig ears have alot of sodium and give puppy the runs. Also, you might want to monitor him with it because bones can slinter and hurt. I only give marley bones when it's lay down time, I never put it in the crate with him at night. Only when I'm taking a shower, or cooking. I found that this teaches him that when I am doing thease things, he needs to cool it.
Something you can give him in the crate to keep him occupied is kongs. You can put anything yummy in there and dogs will love trying to get it out. When it gets warmer here I like putting chicken broth and some meat and then freeze it in the kong and he licks and licks and licks and licks, and that's safe to put in the crate. plus it keeps them busy!

He is still very young, and Toy breeds need to be let out to potty more frequently than larger breeds. He's also adjusting to his new home, and to you. Put him on a schedule for eating and eliminating, and jot down the times he goes, so you have a better idea how much time it takes between eating and eliminating. He may have been kept crated for long periods of time if he came into shelter from a breeder.

This is very normal; everything in his life has changed, and he'll need time to feel safe and secure. Do everything you can to boost his confidence.

How much time is he spending in the crate? The spinning may be stress related.

Telling a dog no means absolutely nothing to him. Instead of saying no, distract him, and then redirect him to something else. Rather than thinking in terms of what you don't want him to do, teach him what you do want him to do instead.
