Talking Finally!

HI!

i havent posted in a while, because i was getting a little down in the dumps over my unsuccessful dog search.

well, happily, my search is finally over!
i got a little puppy!

She is a 13 week old Chocolate LAb and she is amazing. I have had her for about a week and she is doing amazing. We are having trouble deciding on a name, but today we are giving Frida a try...

WE have started working on housetraining, and she is doing a great job. Very few accidents, and when she does it is only because we leave her for a little to long or we arent paying close enough attention. She is really smart and catching on quick. She didnt have a single accident yesterday.. PRetty good for her first week.

We are also starting obedience class next week, so I am very excited because she is going to need it. She si not very good on the leash yet, she likes to show her affection by nipping, and she insists on eating everything from mulch to dog poo.

But I was wondering if anyone had any adivce for me on a few things.

She has been very good in her crate at night, but usually wakes up at around 430 for a pee. I take her out and she goes right away and is very good. But the only problem is that I work and wake up in the morning at 6am, so i can feed and walk her before I head out. So when I put her back in her crate at 435, she barks and howls until 6 am. I ignore her when she does this, but it doesnt help. i was considering moving the crate out of my room, but i thought that might upset her routine that she is doing so well with, plus i think it is comforting to be around her person. Is this barking thing just going to have my patience to work through, or is ther anything I can do to make her stop for those 2 hours?

Also, she got very attached to me right away. Within the first hour of knowing her, she was like my shadow. The only problem is that if i go to another room, or even go to the bathroom, she starts crying and trying to follow me. She gets very upset when someone else takes her outside, or away from me. She also gets very sad when I leave for work. Is this separation anxiety unusual for a puppy? and will she grow out of it?

any puppy advice would be very helpful.

thanks (and sorry this post is so long)

Re: Finally!

thanks!

i came up with frdia because frida kahlo is one of my fave artists and right around the time i got her was my last week of working at the phila museum of art where we ahd a frida exhibition.

but i actually decided not to go with frida.
hahah it wasnt the best of jobs there, so i dont know if i should have that daily reminder...haha

we are actually going now with rosie.

seriously, the hardest part of getting a dog is not the housebreaking, or basic puppy trianing...its giving the doggie a name!!!

haha

Re: Finally!

CONGRATS! I miss having a puppy around. I may soon try to talk my parents into letting me foster. xD

I remember with Shunka at night she would howl all night. In the crate (at the time a basket with a screen and brick on top and blankets in side for bedding). I layed down next to her at night, and she would go right to sleep. Win-Win. She still gets alittle nervous when it's not me taking her out, and she's 6, but I'm the only one in the family who has never hit her. (My parents and brother's idea of training involved hitting the dog when they don't do as told. Needless to say they get chewed out when they do such a thing.) She might grow out of getting so nervous without you around, because you haven't had her for long, she's probably missing her litter mates. Shunka used to yap when I left her tied outside and I walked off, but she grew out of it. If your puppy doesn't grow out of it soon though, you'll need to help her with SA. It doesn't sound like that just yet though. Just puppiness.

With me the naming was easy...
Lakota speaking..
Kola=Friend (It started as Snowy, but someone at the bar pointed out she looked like the Cola Bear, but since Kola meant friend, it's spelled funky.)
Shunka=Dog (that was my all my mom's idea. It had been 2 weeks and no name. Shunka just stuck.)
Fang=Fang (And I won't let my brother forget it that he isn't Falcon but Fang. I hate that name.)
