Question Considering a Coonhound

I'm a 23-year male wanting a dog that's fun, loyal, and smart. I started reading up on Coonhounds. I'm a Tennessee Volunteer fan through and through, so naturally I looked at a Bluetick. I didn't realize how many other kinds of Coonhounds there are.

I see that they can be mischievous if left up to their own devices. I work from 7-5. I don't have my own house, but plan on purchasing a home soon. It won't be out in the wilderness where a coonhound would I guess be more in his element, but I would be sure to take it out with me and exercise.

I was hoping if someone has any advice to please share; or has tried to raise one in a neighborhood before. I understand they can be loud and nocturnal. I just wonder if I'd be doing a Coonhound an injustice if he wasn't able to roam free all day long. I wonder if raising him as a pup indoors with a half-acre backyard to play in would suffice his curiosity.

Any advice. Thanks!

well my neighbor has a blue tick and he says he has three major issues...

1. the howling..she howls at random noises all the time and that has earned bob several noise complaints to the cops...

2. he can't let her in the house because she's very destructive if left to her own devices even after hours of exercise...

3. she is really sensitive. you use the wrong tone with her and she gets standoffish and sometimes aggressive..

I think that any hunting dog would probably be a pretty high drive sort of dog. of course they all have their own personalities but that would be a dog to watch out for around cats, around kids(because of the energy and size) and around new people..

not a dog to be slack with but not a dog to be real harsh with either...if I were you I would look up different training methods and have your training protocol at least somewhat defined before getting any dog, especially for a hunting breed.

Re: Considering a Coonhound

I've seen some good ones, some bad (never trained/socialized/pretty much left to their own devices and kept outside) ones. I'll let someone more familiar with them comment on them specifically, but I'd be sure NOT to get one from working lines- if you want a companion, get one that's not bred for the hunting drive.

They all are beautiful animals, they are on my "dogs I must own in the future" list.

here's bob(my neighbor with the blue tick) i'll let him type...

they get real crazy sometimes if you letm get too bored. mine though she gets so excited about every little noise(they got real good hearing) that she starts hollering and trying to track the sound so i can't let her in cuz she does it in the house too..won't take to a crate either..so she got a nice little set up in the yard with my other dog, a catahoula cur. we go on three 1 and a half hour walks a day and I strung a coonskin up just out of their reach so they spend most of the day trying to hop up and pull that thing down and we go out to the woods on the weekends..givem lots to think about and exercise and you should be ok...they howl a lot though so make sure you live where you got nice neighbors....

I'd love to own a coonhound one day....when we have about 30 acres for them to patrol.

Re: Considering a Coonhound

I haven't had a lot of experience with Coonhounds but did have a Bluetick x Walker Hound for about eight months. I got her to keep Susie company when she was a pup as she hated being left alone. Tally was a very vocal dog, very easily trained but spent all her time finding ways to escape from my one acre that was well fenced. Even with lots of exercise, she was very wild in the house and after trying every way I could to keep her contained, rather than keep her chained (which I refuse to do) I rehomed her with someone that hunted his hounds. She turned out to be one of his best hounds and I am sure is much happier doing what she was bred for.
