Peeing problems

Ok, I have an 8 month old mini dacshund. He was pretty well house-broken when he was about 6 months old. He might would have an occasional accident here and there but nothing major. Out of no where he just started peeing in the house at least once a day. We would take him outside, he would go maybe 2 or 3 times, come in the house and pee again. We took him to the vet when it first started occuring, and they diagnosed him with a bladder infection, gave him some meds and sent us on our way. Well he finished the meds, and yet he still insists on peeing in the house. Did he get used to doing it while he was sick, or is he just marking his territory? And also, we did have a younger puppy stay with us a while back. So could that be it? Would it help to get him fixed? I deperately need some answers. I love the dog, but the landlord won't deal with it much longer and I don't know if I can. Please Help.

Re: Peeing problems

I would bring him back to the vet to make sure the meds cleared it up, you may have to do another round of meds. Have you cleaned the spots were he peed with a cleaner that is meant for pet odors? He may be confused if he can smell himself in your home, and think it is ok to go inside because of that.

If he is marking he would just be lifting his leg and peeing a little bit most of the time. If he doesn't still have UTI you may have to start at the basics, like you are house breaking a new puppy until he is going outside agian.

Fixing him may or may not help if he is marking, either way it should be done if you have no intent on showing him. My old male doxie was about your dogs age when he started to mature, but he didn't start lifted his leg till he was after one. You also need to remember he is still a puppy and like children they can have set backs and are still learning.

Re: Peeing problems

I guess it would be a smart thing to take him back to the vet. I have cleaned the spots very well with the best cleaner I have ever came across. He has been lifting his leg to go since he was about 5 months old, and sometimes it is just a little bit we he goes in the house...other times its as if he has been holding it all day. The vet has said he still has a very small bladder. But when we take him outside, he'll go 2 or 3 times, sometimes more, and come right back in and use it. I guess I'll ask the vet when I take him back in about the whole neutering thing. I have started back today trying to re-house train him. I have had him tethered to me when I'm trying to do something, and he has not left my sight...so maybe this will work. Thanks.

Re: Peeing problems

Good luck, sounds like you are doing everything right. I have always had female dogs up until my last doxie (he was hit by a car about 4 months ago) and the whole boy dog thing was new to me, but from my understanding though is once they start lifting there leg they will even if you get them fixed. my pup gets so made when I tether him to me and pouts. Good luck, you shoudl probably get it strightened out in no time.
