Arrow For all those who have had to say goodbye...

The video on this website is very heartfelt. And although it's sad, it's also comforting. I, too, have had to say goodbye to a pet.

Teddy (Llaso Apso-13 years old)

My family had him since I was 8 years old and he passed away two years ago right before Thanksgiving. I didn't get to say goodbye to him.

Re: For all those who have had to say goodbye...

That makes me want to cry. I started thinking about my dear old Charlie, we lost him on December 15, 2008 at the age of 14 yrs. We adopted him when I was 7 yrs old, and he was one of the last things left from when my dad was around. But I was able to be there, he had had cancer for over a year and it was time to let him go.

Re: For all those who have had to say goodbye...

i'm sorry... i should have put a warning: read alone! you will cry! but it makes you feel better at the end of it. that one day you'll see them again. i don't care if people say animals don't go to heaven. i think pets have spirits and they belong with us on the other side.

amybeth-your dog was/is beautiful. i'm sure he is greatly missed.

I just lost our little Nikki this morning. She's with us for just 4 months but she's the only dog that touched my heart. The sweetest and most well-behaved puppy ever.

Re: For all those who have had to say goodbye...

When my baby peenut passed someone showed me a sort of poem which went something like, ...when you can eat the same thing day after day and never complain, not care what your friends have or look like, give love unconditionally etc... This is a poor rendering and not nearly as touching as the page I was shown. I was comforted by the poem and have wished ever since that I had a copy of it. I would love to share it. My question is does anybody know what poem I am talking about? Thanks.

Unhappy Re: For all those who have had to say goodbye...

Dear Jasmine,
Today marks 30 days without you in our lives. I still weep for you. I still look at the backdoor to see if you are watching me as I work in the flower gardens. I have to stop myself from asking if you want to 'go' when we run an errand. I am still getting up at 5:30 AM to feed you and checking the clock to see if it's close to 2:00 PM yet. I still have not been able to go for our evening walk-it's just too hard to do this without you. I still look for you when we go to bed. I am keeping my promise that I made to you. Our letter to the FDA about the drug that killed you is ready to mail. Our letter to the DVM board is going then also. The guilt I still have for giving you that first dose of ProIn weighs heavy on my heart. I am so sorry I made you take it but I trusted the Vet and thought it was what you needed. I will never begin to forgive myself. I hope you have forgiven me for what I had to do Sept 4, 2009. You were just so sick. You looked so unhappy. You had not eaten anything for 3 days. Not chicken, not steak, nothing. You would not even drink water when I offered it to you. Hope it's OK that I gave your food and cookies to a 'no kill' shelter. I have kept your toys and favorite blanket. We just miss you so much Jas. You became my child when the other 2 legged children left home. Please take care my baby girl and I hope you have found Hambone, Shakes and Budley at The Rainbow Bridge. Play, eat, run and chase lizards for us. I also hope that you see the candle I light for you every Monday night.
We will always love you and miss you and you will be in my heart for eternity.
Love,
Mom

When I lost my baby Peenut I walked the mountain trails where we spent so much time and did more than my share of crying. One day I met a terribly sad older woman on my walk. We talked and she told me she had just lost her pup. Somehow talking with her helped. You can contact the humane society near you and they will probably have a support group. When my friend was grieving, she volunteered with a rescue group and said it really helped get her through the worst. Just know that although you will not forget, you will heal with time.

I was doing better, calming down, but that was a bit much...and my waterworks are back on. I just put my first dog to sleep and its been really hard, I know its even harder for my mom. This is a really lovely video.

Re: For all those who have had to say goodbye...

Beautiful rendering of the Rainbow Bridge. I know my pup is there, waiting, too. She passed away at 12:30am on January 30, 2009. She took her last breath in my arms, and my husband cradled her head in his hands. Each day I cried more than the day before. Each night I couldn't sleep, because she was always against my leg, and her warm weight was no longer there. The quiet emptiness in our house was so deafeningly loud. After a few weeks, I got up out of bed in the middle of the night, and just started cooking, and cooking and cooking. Every pot, pan and measuring spoon was out of the cupboard. That is how our SunnyPaw snacks began - it helped me continue to share her goodness and spirit with other pups.

Our companion animals make us all better people - more compassionate, thoughtful, timely, and tuned in to rhythms other than our own. Best wishes to all those who have lost their beloved pets - carry on their love.
