| You are probably SOL. This is one reason dogs should not be left outside unattended. If you have your dog loose and not under your direct control, then you are taking a chance that if police or rescue personel need to come onto your property for legal reasons (i.e. warrant, pursuit of a suspect, fire, medical emergency) that they won't have to take necessary measures to protect themselves.
I'm sorry your dog payed the ultimate price, since they can't make decisions about where it's safest and best for them to live (inside the house with the humans, vs alone outside)....but if I were a cop and had a pitbull off leash coming at me, I would do whatever necessary to protect myself and continue to do my job...including lethal force.
To insinuate that they had anything other than self-preservation in mind is absolutely insulting to police officers. As for the hearsay from your neighbors There's a reasont that kind of stuff isn't allowed in court. |

| How is the spent shell casing relevant? Are the police suggesting that the dog fired first?
This is horrible and tragic, but it's a giant leap to accuse the police of excessive force. I wasn't there and, unfortunatley, neither were you. |

| The first thing I'd do is go to your local media ... see if you can get your story on the nightly news. Explain that, so far, you haven't found anyone to help you with any action against the PD. If you can manage to get your story heard, you'll very likely find the help you need. |

I'm sure the media will be ALL over that one...but probably not on the pitbull's side of things.
To the original poster - what exactly are you looking for here...do you want the police officers fired from their jobs? Do you want money from the police department (which, in reality, is just the taxpayers)? Just how much money would make you "whole" again?
Finding an attorney willing to take a case against the PD is usually not hard to do...most lawyers love a case that will put them in the spotlight. Finding a lawyer to take on a case in which the PD was most likely well within the law of performing their duties and protecting themselves against a breed "the masses" generally tend to see as aggressive and dangerous...yeah, that might be a wee bit hard to do |

| I missed the APBT part in the original post ... although there's really no such thing as an American Pit Bull Terrier (it took me a few minutes to figure out what an APBT actually was in reference to), I don't refer to Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, & Rat Terriers (and similar breeds with names) as "Pits" so, I'd have to agree the media will not likely take your side. |

| Legally, pets are consider to be "property." If the police mistakenly break down your front door while in pursuit of a suspect, I imagine they'd reimburse you for the replacement costs (probably their insurance would cover it). Maybe this falls under the same category. Before getting the media and lawyers involved, why not call or write a nice letter to the police chief explaining the situation and how devestated you are that your beloved family pet was taken from you. |

| I have great admirtion (sp again ) and respect for non-crooked police officer.
However I am not one nor am I gay so I am not offende.
Anyway. I do not sit with my dogs when I let them out side. If I am out I 'm out if I am not I'm not. It is my yard. If someone came in my yard and shot my dog I would be very upset and I do not think it is wrong to let my dogs out without constantly starring at them. I would not leave them out an leave the house though. |

You don't need to be gay or an officer to be offended you need to be a person who cares about the issue. I am personally offended, that sort of comment is deploriable, insensitive and discriminatory.
I wonder if it is allowable under the terms of use.

| I am SO sorry about your dog. That is so sad. While I have the utmost respect for police, I would probably try to get some legal advice/counsel as well. I work full time and am gone 10 hours a day. When I had my two shelties I had a doggie door so they were allowed to be outside/inside while I was gone. I could never just watch my dogs EVERY time they were out. I'm assuming you didn't have a fenced in yard? Again, my sympathies. |

| Poor thing, i wish you luck with the finding of someone to help you out legally, those police men should be ashamed of themselves, a dog is allowed to bark. |
