Bagheera

I haven't been on here in a while, mostly due to work...I am a vet tech at an animal hospital and we have been extraordinarily busy and short staffed lately!

We had a tragedy this week/today with our cat Bagheera. He was barely two years old and a strictly indoor only cat but somehow he managed to break his left hip. My boss/the vet could only say that he must have tried to jump on something and missed and or jumped off something and landed wrong. We were really upset (obviously) and he went into surgery this morning to have the hip replaced.

Although he was only 2 years old I wanted to still do all the pre-anesthetic bloodwork and other precautions to make sure he would be okay under anesthesia. Everything was perfect and I even put in an IV catheter so he could be given fluids throughout surgery. I was the tech for some of the surgery and then had to leave for a final exam in class...which I was kind of bummed about.

As you may have already assumed Bagheera crashed about 5 to 10 minutes after I left and despite their amazing (and long) efforts to rehabilitate Bagheera he didn't pull through. The only thing we can think that happened was that he had a heart condition that we could not have foreseen. It came as a massive shock although I am glad I was not there to see it happen I am thoroughly devastated. My poor vet feels at fault and very upset, but Baggy literally went from perfectly fine to not breathing and we did everything we did as a precaution before the sx.

It's just scary to think that these things can happen when you least expect and I just wanted to write about here to give myself some comfort. It's very hard when it comes this unexpectedly!

RIP Bagheera...you will forever be in my heart!

I'm so sorry for you, I know it's hard. Especially when they are so young.

Re: Bagheera

Thanks everyone! I have been a lot better about everything despite working with animals every day. The vets at work have been really great about not having me assist with euthanasias and that sort of thing until I can handle them again. It's mostly things like that that bring up feelings of a loss

Bridgette and our other cat Luna seem to be slowly adjusting to one less cat in the house so it's been okay, but still doesn't seem the same yet.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sometimes I think working with the animals helps ease the pain. We can't save them all, even when they're our own, but we can just cherish every moment with the ones we have and ones we can save.

After I lost my old kitty Sheba, my first duty on the job was assisting in a cat euth. In a way, it was almost comforting, because I knew that we were ending the poor thing's suffering, just like with Sheba.

Re: Bagheera

God bless every one of you who work to make our good friends passing a little softer. You all do what I cannot and I thank you for it.

Crazy, I'm glad you're feeling a little better, and I hope your other two kitties are helping you deal with the pain of loss.
