It has taken me months to be able to write this without crying so badly that I could not finish typing. I have tried to post this many times.
Nana was a shelter rescue with less than 6 hours till she would have been PTS. I rescued her on Jan 29th 2005. I had been trying for over a year to fundraise to get my autistic son an autism assistance dog. No one had ever heard of such a thing where I'm from and so we got no help at all. I did research for months and communicated extensively with disabled individuals that had trained their own service dogs and finally decided to do this myself. I will not go into all the details of her training ect.
Fast forward 1 year. Nana was the first service dog of any type in my town. She was a celebrity of sorts....but more she was my friend and partner in caring for my son. I lost count of how many times she saved his life by stopping him from running into a street or leaving the house. Once she saved the entire family from a fire. The smoke alarm did not go off....she did. She was more than a service dog as well....she was therapy for the entire family. And to think that this wonderful dog would have been PTS because she was not a cute little puppy. We think she was about 6 years old when we adopted her.
We lost Nana to a stroke in October of 2007.
I miss you Nana. There will never be another like you.
