Re: Can you please delete my account?

I am 99% sure that I have a static ip. We had to buy the business Internet service for our home because my husband has to do a lot of uploading and downloading for work, so we needed better speed for that sort of thing. We also get a static ip address with the business package. Although I do not know if that means the ip address is static to the router or if it is static to my computer itself. All I can say is that in all of the years of having this Internet set up, a static ip has never once caused me a problem. To be honest I have never had anything hacked or given a virus or any other of the yucky things that happen to computers. I have definitley had my own share of computer issues but none of them have been the result of hacking or viruses. I suspect that hacked and virus are often used as catch all terms if someone doesn't know what happened to cause the problem. Where as my problems have all been diagnosed. This is the reason I think that people get "hacked' or 'viruses' and I never have. Although we also have password protected networks, firewalls, firefox, and my very own IT guy, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of the the cure.

I did have one bad experience, but I certainly won't stop enjoying my computer or friendly forums. The tech was just here trying something on my computer. and yes, whatever they pulled from my I.P. gave them my city, addy etc. and the PO who sent the filth seems to be a well known troll, hard to pin down , for now, since I never post anything personal I am ignoring the whole thing and treating it as a bad dream.
Again, this forum has nothing to do with the problem I experienced and I think it's by far one of the friendliest. Kudos to you all, hope it stays that way.
Oh, the unplugging modem thing doesn't work...was the first thing I did...unplugged for a week...what a waste....lol.

I seriously doubt anyone got your physical, street address from just your IP Address. Not unless your ISP gave them that information. You can go to ARIN and look up who owns or is allocated any IP Address and get a physical address - normally the ISP. From there, the ISP would have to look up (and subsequently divulge) who was/is using a given IP Address. Something they are not going to do unless you have something along the lines of a warrant or subpeona for that info. Your address (the private user) is not going to appear in ARIN's database.

If someone hacks your computer, they may get any information you have on your PC (including your address), but that really has more to do with your security set up (or lack thereof) on your home network.

Re: Can you please delete my account?

Have no idea wha an ISP is...I just found out what an IP is. I really don't undersand what exactly happened except that our teck said somehow the info was lifted with some kind of something. Yes, he told me it was possible to get your home info through satellite with one of these gizmos whatever they are. But after asking many friends who have been on forums for ages, it seems they have come up with a troll that is well known and some have gone through the same thing. I'm at the point where a technician course might be helpful. Someone also mentioned a program by the name of blacklist that I don't understand either.

Re: Can you please delete my account?

ISP = Internet Service Provider. aka the company that provides your internet.

Re: Can you please delete my account?

Oh sorry, not familiar with all the initials yet. Yes, the company did notice some kind of problem, they will be clearing things up for me, but they do want to try and find out what is going on.

Please nobody get angry with me for saying this!

The passwords are stored in the databases being used. The database admin (I assume in this case, Dave) can access the database through phpMyAdmin and access the passwords, if I remember correctly. I once had to be able to get in to view a member's private messages due to a report of harassment, and I had two options -- the database or changing their PW to get into their account. I chose the databases.

Re: Can you please delete my account?

I just checked on my vBulletin. With the current version of the software, passwords are encrypted, even in the raw database. With older versions, they were visible to admin.

Re: Can you please delete my account?

That's probably a good thing then, Lorina. Not all admins are "good people" if that makes sense.

When I had to get into somebody's PM box, it was on a VERY private forum I ran where the harassment in question was an incredibly serious offense.

I've used those kinds of websites to get access to a forum I was unfairly banned from, the admin was a real jerk, and I was able to get on the site and log onto my account to get some things I needed from my pm box. They are called proxy sites. I was able to use one of those at schools to access myspace but the proxy site blocked 10 min after I started using it. They were that fast.

Please stop talking about all the other forums you all have had problems with unless you're:
  1. Having problems with THIS one, or
  2. Wanting us to say, "I told you so."
I'm joking, but only a little.

You're funny! I like admin's & mod's that can tell us to shut it with a joke rather than being mean!!!

An ip address is like a street address, given to your computer by a server at your internet service provider's place of business. It allows other computers, wanting to send information to you, to know where to locate your computer.

I would really like you to try and delete my account - or at least take my details off your computer. I am not finding anybody particularly helpful, the site takes ages to come up, I don't like the brown colour theme, and I find all the flashy advertisments very distracting & annoying.

Please can you get back to me as soon as possible with good explanations as to why members' accounts on Dog Forums cannot be deleted?
Okay... I just gotta say this, Bark... I have looked at your other post to try and figure out why you feel that members here are not perticularly helpful, you started out here very critical of this sight complaining that you didnt like the colors, you felt that the sight was just moving too slow, you don't like the advertisements, as far as I could tell... you asked one question about actual dogs and that was that you needed the size of labs, right down to detail, shoulder height weight and every thing, others took the time to answer that question for you,,, Bark, did you ever stop to wonder that the problem just might be you? That you were here to create problems rather than get helpful information... I guess my question is "What are you or were you here for?" I am not normaly this voiceterouse but I have found this sight to be very helpful by the true members here who are here for the love of there pets and are seeking help or information and those that give advice which is what I can relate to and what keeps us comunicating... but yes, it's going to be very hard for you to make friends here or others to relate to you when your only purpase here seems to be to complain about a free sight in which the advertisements help in keeping this sight available to all of... why dont you try and be a little more appriciative? Just some food for thought here!

Re: Can you please delete my account?

It is unlikely you will get a response, Bark seems to be a thread starter, but it never seems he/she sticks around a thread long enough to respond.

that being said I have the same questions as you do ruby
