Breed Forum/threads

A lot of people come on this forum looking for information about certain breeds that they are considering to add to their family. I think it would be a good idea if we had a sub forum for dog breeds. Or maybe not even a forum but threads. We dont need a thread for every breed (there are way too many!) but some of the more popular breeds that we have seen questions on; Such as Boxers, Shih Tzus, Rottweilers, and Poodles.

Maybe members on this forum can make threads of the breeds that they own and have researched about (Boxmein for Boxers, Curbside Prophet for Schnauzers, Shalva for Golden Retrievers, Snowshoe for Keeshond....).

I really like this idea.

Since I own a Shih Tzu, only pure breed, I could try and make an info thread about the breed. It may take me a little while, but It could be fun

Another idea that might save space would be to create a forum for each group, instead of breed (sporting, non-sporting, herding, etc).

Re: Breed Forum/threads

I love this idea...I actually suggested something similar awhile ago but I was told that there are too many "subforums" as it is...but I really do think it would be a worthy subforum to have. It would be a great research tool for people, and definitely A LOT more reliable than some of the other more popular "breed research sites" out there today...

Not to take anything away form the board members, but how would the information on such a subforum be automatically more reliable, as a "research tool," than what's out there already?

And, yes, we do have too many subforums already.

Well, you can read about breed standards all you would like, but they're NOT very reliable in my experience, whereas talking to or getting to know owners of specific dog breeds is much more reliable. You can really get a feel for how it would be to own a specific breed. I actually have a good laugh when looking at "breed specific info" on most of the "research" sites...my dogs must be very weird because they hardly fit the breed standard of their breeds (personality wise). The closest would be Tank, my Bulldog. Also, I think that a lot of "breed specific" sites leave out some of the care requirements that certain breeds need...or downplay it.

I don't know...that's just how I see it...and if we have too many subforums anyway and aren't adding this section, then I dunno why I'm typing this up...LOL!

Re: Breed Forum/threads

Well, I really like the threads idea way better. I know there is lots of information on every breed out there, and more. But I know from personal experience that when searching for a breed, I would like to know peoples personal experience with that particular breed. I could look all over the internet about what Shar Peis are supposed to be; stubborn, dont like other animals or strangers. But then if you asked me about them, someone who has a lot of personal experience with many different individual dogs, I could tell you that yes some Shar Peis are like that but most like strangers and love people, just not like a Labrador. And alot of them get along fine with other animals, especially when raised from puppyhood with them.

Re: Breed Forum/threads

So if somebody wants to know about Shar Peis, they could post a topic like, "Tell me about shar peis."

Why does that require a new subforum?

And I think it would be pretty presumptuous of me to post everything I think I know about Plott hounds*, just on the off-hand chance that somebody might be wondering.

*Which, by the way, is not nearly enough.

I agree, but I see a lot of sites and books over-exaggerating the grooming requirements. Especially with cats, "A Siamese has to be brushed once a week" He, I never brush Lily, she doesnt need it, she gets petted and thats all she needs.

They over-exaggerate the wrinkles of a Shar Pei "must be careful to wash between all wrinkles" it's just like washing a normal dog, just the skin moves a lot more. A person actually told me they wanted a Shar Pei but they didnt want to have to deal with the "special" baths..

I guess thats the way it's going to be. I suggested it because I would like to know about the Boxers and Greyhounds, I love learning about dog breeds. The top of the forum says "Your #1 Pet Forums for all dog breeds and needs", so I don't see why it would be a problem to have threads about the more popular breeds. I don't think their should be a Shar Pei thread, I have not once seen anyone ask about them so there would be no need for it.

Re: Breed Forum/threads

I agree sillylilykitty ~ many needs of specific breeds are exaggerated as well as downplayed. I have just seen many sites downplay Bulldog needs which I have a lot of experience with, so that is what I thought of first

This is what I would see the subforum as...

One thread for each breed, and then one post per member who owns that specific breed. It should be a locked forum where the posts must be submitted to mods for approval before being posted. These posts, which would be to help inform others who are researching the breeds, would have to be well thought out and not just the typical "oh yeah this dog breed is great!" type thing.

I don't know...it may not be worth the effort...but then again maybe it would be
