Unhappy American Eskimo and Diabeties

Casper Simpson - our American Eskimo dog of 10 years passed away today.
The poor dog lost his sight and then died from liver failure with complications with diabeties. His momma dog died two years back to cancer. Siblings from the litters I've been told also have died from either tumors or cancer or diabeties. The soul survivor is the father dog named Chief. He also was diagnoised with diabeties. He's doing good so far on his sugar count.
I need to know how common is diabeties with the American Eskimo breeds.
I'd have another American Eskimo dog. They are such loving dogs.
In Memory of Casper Simpson, a loving and very special dog. he will be missed.
Born on Christmas day--10 years ago.
Died Sunday morning at 3 A.M on August 27th 2006 of Liver failure due to diabeties.
Soul Survivor the father Chief Simpson.
Momma dog died 2 years back of cancer.
Note picture attached. I haven't figured out how to put it along side the message yet. But Casper was the Standard
bigger dog, his father Chief, the smaller dog. Momma dog was the size of Chief. We have yet to figure out how Casper came out of a litter of 7. Fortunately they only had two litters. He's always been special. He's at peace now on farm acres that belong to my son. I will be going through this again with Chief. Until then the vet seems to be providing me with proper medication to slow down liver failure due to diabeties. Thankyou for all your replies. Casper is with
Sugar Haley-momma dog now.

First off, I'm very sorry about your loss.

It's hard to lose a best friend, pet, companion. But it sounds like poor Casper had a rough go, and now at least he's out of pain.

I don't know the breed well, but it sounds like a horrible breeding to me. If many of the puppies have had serious health issues, than this bitch should not have been bred it seems to begin with.

Who did you get the puppy from? A reputable breeder who did all of the health testing necessary?

RIP Casper

So sorry to hear about your precious dog. American Eskimos are so beautiful with those piercing eyes. To answer your question, diabetes is very common in Eskimo breeds, and not so much because of genetics, but rather because of obesity. We know that these dogs were bred to run, and expend enormous amounts of energy, but many times when they are kept as pets they do not get the exercise they need, and the end result is obesity. This is the leading cause for diabetes, not just in humans, but for dogs too. I hope this helps.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. AED s are an amazing breed. I am sorry I can't help you with the genetics question, other than diabetes does have a genetic link, so if either parent in ANY breed has it, it is likely the offspring will develop it. In the practice I work at, which is small and rural, we have only 1 dog with diabetes, and 4 cats. If I remember correctly, the dog is a poodle.

My son purchased the momma dog & father dog from a reputable pet store.
The cost was alot. The one thing I have no regrets for now was never
breeding Casper. He was a Standard sized adorable, loveable dog. He only lived to the ripe age of 10 years. He's with momma dog and other siblings now. Both dogs had papers. I was wondering about the whole Eskie breed line. The father dog, Chief, so far seems to be doing good. We have
him on medication to slow down the destruction of the liver process.

Thankyou. Casper was such a loving beautiful happy Eskie. He had alot of his mom's traits. Loved to chase after a ball. He lost his sight first but managed well without it. He went down hill so fast in one week. Before that week he seemed okay enough and had a good appetite. It all happened so fast. But the big thing the entire family visited him on his last day.
He even cracked a smile as everyone just loved him up. My youngest
stayed up all night petting him, until Casper left us. It's so hard to loose a pet. They become so much a part of the family. The sad part is I get to go through this again with the father dog Chief. But with proper medication, I'm hoping to slow down this liver deteriation process. He's a very happy dog and has a good appetite. Like father like son. There's just been so much tragedy in this blood line. It makes me wonder how they got to be dogs with papers. But I'd do it all over again. The Eskies are beautiful loving caring dogs.
