Unhappy irritation from flea shampoo ?

My 6 month old lab/chow got into some high grass across the street and got fleas. So I gave her a bath w/ shampoo. Now she's biting and scratching the insides of her hind legs, which is where most the fleas were, to the point of losing her hair. I haven't seen any more fleas and she does not have any skin discoloration or pustles. What can I put on her to soothe her skin ? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Get an oatmal shampoo and wash off all of the flea bath. You can get something like AvoDerm spray to soothe any irritated spots. Talk to your vet about her reaction (be sure to show them the bottle of shampoo you used) and see what they think about trying other products, like Advantage or Frontline.

Try some baby powder on her. Her skin my still be irritated from flea bites, even if the fleas are gone. My vet has recommended benadryl for extreme irritation, swelling or allergic reactions. It works. If your vet approves of this, it will knock down her discomfort and allow her skin to begin to calm down. Of course, you will have to figure out the source of this problem, and not just treat the symptoms. It could be the shampoo, if rinsing was not thorough. If it continues, you should have her to the vet.

Most benadryl is 30 mg. caps or tabs. I would not give a six month old more than 15 mg. the first time. Check with your vet.

If you have some witchhazel liquid toner, swab that on with a cotton ball. Let it spread on the skin till it is wet all over. Stoke and comfort the pup while the witchhazel dries. It may give her some relief. You can apply the powder after she is dry. You can use the witchhazel, several times a day. Good luck.
