Dog in heat for spaying?

I have a question , well before I say anything I would like to say that my puppy is not in heat...nor pregnant.

I've been looking for places to spay my puppy and it always says "if dog in heat/or pregnancy " it will cost more.. Now when they spay when then dog is in heat or pregnancy what happens? When in pregnancy does she lose her babies? Tell me more please..

If they spay a dog in heat, she is more at risk for hemorrhage - same if she's prego. And yes they remove the babies.

Just now I was wondering why they wouldn’t spay my dog when she was in heat, but at that time I didn’t think of asking the vet…Thanks for the response.

You can get a spay done while the dog is in heat. But the blood loss is more.
I would recommend waiting atleast 2 weeks after a heat if that was the case and getting it done. Kita was spayed 2 weeks after her cycle and I was not going to let anymore time pass, there was a chance she could have been preggo.
Luckily she wasnt, but she had tied with a male.
It costs more because of the extra blood loss and precautionary things that they have to do. And really its worth the extra $80 (cdn) to not take deserving homes from homeless animals just for an "oops, but I cant abort them" litter.

quick dumb question... how do you know if your dog is in heat?? I've only had males... and I now have a female who needs to be spayed ASAP and I'm not sure if she's even had her first heat yet... (she's 1 year)

Most dogs will have their first heat at about six months and every six months after that. It's not impossible for the fist heat to occur at 12 months.

Can you see her little boobies? (Sorry. Technical term.) They are usually more pronounced after the first heat.

Your vet will be able to tell you if she's had her first heat.

a mature spay ( after a heat) usually costs a bit more than a premature one as well ( Up here where our "funny money" is lol)
The vet explained it to me as the uterus changes after a heat ( or something like that)
Dont be afraid to ask your vet why they charge X price for this but not that...
LOL, some questions I have asked the vet, you could tell that they would have prefered me not ask, but I like to know what justifies more money being spent at this clinic vs the next.

When in heat, the blood vessels to the uterus become VERY large, and there is quite a bit of collateral circulation as well. When your dog is spayed, they remove the entire uterus and ovaries. The big vessels are tied and cut, but the little ones are just torn. In a dog thats not in heat, these vessels usually seal shut when they tear and bleed very little, but when the dog is in heat, these vessels are wider and "leak" for a little while before sealing themselves.

And yes, the more heat cycles a dog goes through, the "softer" the uterus gets, and I can tell you from personal experience that very important body parts (like the ovarian artery) can crumble in your hands/instruments if you aren't careful. I've only done 3 spays though... so hopefully your vet handles tissue better than I do

For the person whos dog is a year old, I can almost guarrantee she's had her first heat. If she hasn't, I'd be very concerned that something is wrong. Either way, spay her now before her risk of mammary cancer gets any higher. Once the dog has had her third heat, there is no reduced risk by spaying and you've lost all the health benefits of spaying young.

OH and while were on the subject....does anyone happen to remember any of the meds /injections that they gave your dog for a spay? I'm looking at the receipt that we got and It's alot of stuff...and not quite sure what they do...

But with the Buprenex Inject (0.3mg/ml)per 0.1 ml that costs 107$ I'd like to know....

Buprenex is a pain medicine... a morphine derivative.

There are half a dozen different ways to pre-med a dog, each vet at my clinic uses a different method, so that probably won't help much. Can you just post what your dog got?
