OCD: How to keep a 7 mo. old inactive?

My 7 month old Bernese Mountain Dog has just been diagnosed with Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) in both shoulders. I have an appointment for a consultation with a surgeon and my vet has told me no running, no jumping and as little activity as possible. Obviously this will be the case after surgery as well. Help! How do you accomplish that with a 75 pound 7 month month old pup who until now has been very, very active. We live out in the country and before now spent most of our time out and about the farm in the fields and woods. I trained him to come when I whisle so he was rarely on a leash at home. I also took him to dog parks regularily where he ran and played with other dogs. So the small walks on a leash each day seem like a punishment to him. We are both really frustrated. Any ideas for inactive acitvities for Hank and I would be greatly appreciated!!

I know it stinks, but for his own health and safety, strict rest and leash walks are what he needs. Get lots of bones to chew (raw only) and a kong that you can fill with fun stuff like peanut butter and yogurt. Freeze it to make it last longer.

Well, that stinks for your puppy! I assume after surgery he will be able to return to running around? I would try to keep him inside as much as possible. Dogs seem to be more calm indoors.

Hopefull after surgery everything will go back to normal.
