Labrador problems

When I met my husband and his family they had 2 labradors, one black and one yellow, Blondie, the yellow lab was 12 and lucky the black lab was 8. They were great dogs, a little overweight but in good health. this last fall. they both passed away within a month of eachother and my concern is before each one passed away they started out by breathing really heavily, drooling uncontrolably, and could barely walk and loosing control of their bladder. we were told the breathing problem was a problem with the throat collapsing something with the Trakea *i think i spelt that right* but loosing control of the bladder and not being able to walk kinda scares me, is this something that labs are prone to have happen to them? we are getting another lab black lab this weekend and I Don't want to have the same thing happen to this one I couldn't imagin losing another dog it would break my heart. if someone could help me I would be most greatful.

Re: Labrador problems

I'm afraid to announce that any dog dying from "natural causes," dies from failure of a vital organ. I don't believe what you described is solely the nature of labs, as I'm sure it's happened to many dogs or various breeds.

Re: Labrador problems

That sounds like something toxic to me, salivating and loss of bladder control would indicate something like an organophosphate poisoning, but there are a lot of other things that would do that too.

Re: Labrador problems

I'm sorry to hear you lost your two dogs in such quick succession. Did they suffer from exactly the same symptoms? If so, could there have been any external influence, like them getting hold of something toxic like someone else suggested?

We have always had labs or lab crosses and know lots of people with them too. I have not heard that they are prone to this sort of illness. Good luck with your new pup, I wouldn't hesitate to get another lab...
