need help with increased liver enzymes

I have a 3 year old sheltie that has a ALT liver enzyme over 1000 anyone have ideas what could cause this. She's not on any meds. other than revolutionfor heartworm. We think she may of been born with it. Has anyone experienced this after their dog taking revolution it's for heartworm and flea medication. Enzymes went from 371 to over a thousand in only 3 weeks. Any advise would be deeply appreciated, it may save her life.

For something like this, I'd advise getting a vet's help. And if the vet doesn't know why she has increased liver enzymes, I'd suggest finding another vet. They should know those things, afterall. >O.o;<

Don't laugh. A possibility, albeit not likely, is gallbladder. My beagle had cholangiohepatitis last January, and I almost lost her. Had to take her to a speciality hospital; she was in ICU there 3 days before diagnosis was made, and by the time she had surgery peritonitis had already developed. She was in ICU another 3 days after surgery. She's now on maintenace medications to the tune of $83.50/month. She's worth every penny though. Ten - 15 years ago she would have died and the cause would never have been known.

Our little 8 month old Border Collie puppy became sick with just a trance like state and over the next few weeks her belly started swelling. We took her to the vet and he did a liver panel and her enzymes and bile acid was greatly elevated. We treated her but she only lived another month, we had to have her put to sleep because she was suffering. The mama dog then became sick about the same way. We treated her but had to have her put to sleep after three months. We were so heartbroken over our precious pets, we began doing much searching. We found out that they had crawled up under our large Sago Palm and were chewing on the little shoots that come up underneath. The mama dog never bothered with the plants, but since a puppy will chew on anything, she found those little tender shoots and feasted on them and her mama joined her. The vet confirmed this and said that those shoots were very poisoneous to pets. These were our very dear pets but the mama was also a Champion Cowdog.

Smile Just Joined This Forum And I Like It

Hello,

I just joined tonight, and would like to say HELLO to all of you. You all seem like me, from reading your posts. I just want to say these forums are a God send. I like my Vet's personality, but thats about it! There are so many things to learn about our dogs. This is my first shot at raising a dog and didn't realize how much was involved, but I am continuing to learn, like all of you! I will be posting from time to time, to see how you all are doing. I love dogs just like you all do, and hope together we can come up with some good solid answers to our very important concerns. Things like Pet Foods Vacinations are all so confusing to me. Its like the more I read, the more confusing I get. As I read here, I see you've all been there too.

Well, if anyone wants to e-mail for any reason, please do. I would love to hear from you!

Have you considered getting your dog checked for hyperadrenocorticism or better known as Cushings Disease? In addition to the high enzyme levels, what was the dogs alkaline phosphatase levels? If your vet is not wanting to be aggressive with this, it might be time to find another vet. Find one that will address all the questions and make you a part of the dogs wellness plan.
