teeth cleaning

I wonder how often people get their dog's teeth cleaned at the vets? My 8 yr old miniature poodle has to go every year because his teeth are really bad for tarter build-up and I brush them too. Now I have a year old schnoodle and I try to brush his teeth every day and he already has some yellow stains on his back teeth.Has anyone ever used the stuff that you wipe or spray on your dogs teeth? I think it is called Petz life or something like that. I just don't like the idea of putting my dogs under anesthesia so often. Thanks for any advice.

Re: teeth cleaning

I scale/scrape my dog's teeth and my cats' teeth with a scaler that I got from Pet supplies Delivered (Omaha Vaccine). I also brush their teeth after scaling and I use "oraVet" (this stuff that makes it harder for the Tartar to stick to the teeth).

Some dogs and cats are much more predisposed to tarar than others and it appears to be genetic.

Re: teeth cleaning

That's weird, my dog hasn't had a problem at all with her teeth. Isn't it expensive to get it done every year? I know at the vet clinic I was at it was not cheap by any means. I know our old cat had tarter problems, it was terrible!

I just brush my doggies teach 1-3 times a week and now she is eating things with bones so that is doing a great job with making them sparkling white

Re: teeth cleaning

we have never slacked with brushing teeth and we constantly give them things to chew to help clean them as well, and the vet always is amazed at how clean their teeth are when we visit (theyre 4 this year). hopefully i will never have a problem that i need to get it done, especially because i try to avoid any kind of sedation or anything with them being deep chested dogs who are high risk when it comes to that stuff.

"with them being deep chested dogs who are high risk when it comes to that stuff."

Re: teeth cleaning

My dog will be 7 in May. and his teeth are still white as day, once in a while I scale them. I dont brush them either. he eats RAW (but has only started that in August/09 and his teeth were amazing then) lots of things to chew on through out his life have kept his teeth great, along with good food Im sure.

Id be worried about putting my dog under once a year for a teeth cleaning.
